I remember to hit the ESS "off" button probably ninety-eight percent of the time I start the JL, but every so often I forget and don't realize until that first stop sign that I forgot to turn it off, and the engine shuts off and then restarts. What's weird (to me) is that those re-starts don't seem nearly as "stout" (not sure that's the best descriptor) as when it starts via the "normal" method. By not nearly as stout, I mean it seems as though it turns over more times before firing, and/or the firing is weak.
Has anybody else noticed this? Since I try not to have the ESS engaged, it's not an issue for me - just curious...

I don't have an answer to your question but it would be helpful to know if you have etorque, as it's been said to "smooth out the ESS".

I have e-torque with ESS. it engages INSTANTLY when I take my foot off of the brake. In fact, I have tried to beat the timing of the restart by taking my foot off of the brake and slamming down on the accelerator as quickly as I can. ESS ALWAYS beats me; I find it to be extremely impressive!

No "etorque" - just the Start/Stop function.

I actually hated it in the beginning but now I use it all the time. I hate to admit it but it’s true. Probably zero gas savings but it make me feel like I’m saving so it’s the thought that counts. Peace!

I hated ESS when I first test drove JLs 18 months ago. Now that I have a JL it doesn’t bother me any more.

OP asked about a possible issue with the function, not whether we like the feature...which he clearly doesnt, either.

I also usually turn mine off, but if I dont, it's instant on restart. If yours isnt, I'd guess there's a prob with charge on the aux battery. Take it to the dealer, make them test that battery, and replace if needed...there have been issues with some of them.

Yes, I do notice the difference between normal start and ESS start. I have '18 JL Sahara (no e-torque). Unless I notice frequent stops (like in a road where lots of lights), I keep it ON always. Not sure if it helps my fuel, but I hope it help burn less fuel.

Well, since this was back at Halloween, I'm sure he's gotten it figured out:like:
@Durango
No - but as Morton noted, it's not that big a deal for me since I don't ever intentionally use ESS (only use it when I forget to push the button).
