Would love to hear your opions,
I personally do think TrailsoffRoad offers a much better UI interface and trails info system.
But maybe Onx is more accurate, ofc all the youtubes raving onit....

lmk what you think of both apps?

I have Gaia and OnX. I've never used trailsoffroad.

OnX is nice because it has user submitted trails. Gaia does not have that. Gaia does have map overlays that are nice, whereas OnX does not have this. I've heard Trailsoffroad has a lot of user submitted trails out west.

Developing routes between the two are bad, IMHO. I have not found a good product out there to draw routes on a web browser and then drive that route while in the car.

I would say try them both to see what you like. I'll probably keep both because each has their strengths and weaknesses. You can find coupon codes online to get each one for about 25 bucks/year, if I remember correctly.

Also, ignore youtubers reviews and walkthroughs. They make it sound like the product is awesome while I've found the apps hard to use and buggy. And that's not just directed at onx or gaia....both apps I've had issues with.

OnX has a crapload of trails (no matter how crappy they are), which is great for areas that lack better trails. TOR focuses on the better trails and gives great details about them, even "walking" you through them as you do it.

OnX records your track. An incredibly useful feature.

You're in LA, which has some trails in OnX, but TOR has none.

Trailsoffroad for me. It is the easiest UI and can just open it and go. You don't need to spend a ton of time trying to layer maps and all this other stuff. Forget Gaia even. I subscribed and never used it once for a trail. If you want to research and love planning then OnX and Gaia are great options. If you want simple and easy to use WITH great features, TOR.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone used the Funtreks app that goes with their books?

I've made routes on Rever, using a computer and then followed them on the app on my phone.

My experience also! Tried multiple different apps and found them so frustrating I always ended up going back to Garmin GPS units, using Garmin maps and Garmin's Basecamp program to create tracks to follow.

I have the OnX and like it, except there is no way to lock screen orientation for navigation which I find disorienting. I thought it had good map overlays and was easy to plan routes and waypoints as well as track and record routes.

I haven't tried that yet, but it did cross my mind. Yes, it's another device, but I kind of feel like dedicated devices that only have one job do that job well.

With OnX and Gaia, don't expect a google maps driving experience!!! When I was building routes, I thought that the apps would say "Turn left". Nope, you have to look at a little triangle on a map to determine where to go. And sometimes the apps will randomly quit, not work, hang up, etc. And I've tried this on Android and an iPad.

I used OnX when we went to Turkey Bay and it worked perfectly there. I loaded it on my iPad and iPhone. I hadn't yet learned that while your ipad can use your phone's hotspot, the phone won't send the GPS coordinates over. Oddly it worked at the trailhead, but didn't keep updating while on the trail - the iPhone, with the GPS inside, did. We used both to keep track of where we were, used a Bulletpoint mount for my phone and ipad and it was pretty cool setup.

I didn't use the trail feature, we just drove around looking for the beginner/intermediate trails and Turkey Bay has a ton. But I thought the app worked great in keeping track of where we were and which direction to go, etc.

Based on some other comments above, I guess each app depends on where you live or plan to wheel. I was able to try out both Gaia and OnX on their webpage and played around a little with both. I went with OnX mainly because we had that 6 month trial period through Jeep and the interface and features just seemed a smidge easier to me.

Wheeling on the east coast, mid-atlantic is a different animal than the west coast, etc., not to mention the desert and so forth. Out where I live it is wooded trails, but I could see if I lived and wheeled in more open areas, that you might need a different tool.

As someone has suggested I would certainly try both, almost all of them have some trial or free version. I loaded Gaia and OnX on my phone/ipad and mainly used Onx since I played around with it more before we went on our trip.

You don't really want it providing turn-by-turn directions, right? That, to me, would be annoying as hell as it tries to get you to u-turn due to taking a different path.
