Trail badges…who or what do they belong to?

Like the title says. Do you feel the badges belong to the rig completing the trail or to the driver who tackled the trail? If you sell your ride or upgrade do you transfer the badges over?

If they're affixed to the Jeep, then they stay with the Jeep. If that weren't the case, then I could complete a bunch of trails, trade the Jeep for a Miata, and move the badges over to the Miata. If someone really wanted to keep the badges, I suggest making a letterman jacket out of them...

I’ve heard that Jeep will only let you order one badge, even if you complete the trail in two different rigs, years apart. That complicates the question.

I'm in the camp of joint ownership. In case of separation, the badges stay with the vehicle. Maybe you can arrange visitation with the new owners though. LOL

This is where I stand, as well.

It's why I don't understand the draw of renting a rig at some of the "big" trails out in Utah and such. WTF is the point of running it in someone else's rig?

I think if I sold and had legitimate badges on the rig, I would initial each one in permanent paint marker. The new guy can keep those or legitimately earn his own.

If I bought a used jeep with any of those badges on it literally the FIRST thing I would do is remove them.

I think you can choose whether to put them on the vehicle or to keep them elsewhere (on a wall, etc.) as personal badges, but once you stick them on the Jeep, they can't be moved to another vehicle. You wouldn't put an Everest badge on a new pair of boots that you purchased afterwards.

Ok - not boots, backpack. I’ve moved patches from one backpack to another. (not an Everest patch - haven’t earned that one )

Now that makes the most sense. But it seems you do lose a little something taking it off the equipment that helped you get it in the first place.

I’d take a large poster sized pic of my Jeep off-roading, and make a nice framed presentation piece with the badges and other stuff to hang on the wall in my man cave.
