I believe if you go up to a 295 or larger tire, you start getting into that area of making additional adjustments for shift points and the likes.
has nothing to do with tire width and everything to do with height. A 255/85r17 is a 34” tire but much skinnier than a 295.

And the question about will this tire fit on a stock rim, the answer is yes. I run 37s on stock rims on my wife’s JLU Willy’s.

285/70/17 is a good fit.

What is the width of the 17" diameter stock Sport steel wheels(rims)? That is useful information when deciding how wide a tire to run on your wheels.

My '22 stock Rubicon wheels are 7.5" wide and came stock with BFG Ko2s in ~33"-- 285/70R17 tires.

The '22 stock Sport steel wheels(rims) come with with 245/75R17 tires so the steel wheels may be narrower than 7.5".

All regular 17" JL wheels are the same 7.5" +44. The only exceptions are the JT Mojave and XR wheels.

You can google calculators that show the difference. Going from a 245/75/17 to 285/70/17 throws off the speedo by around 2mph at 75mph. Need, probably not. Want, that's your choice. I've been riding around without changing the speedo for 2 years. The transmission doesn't "hunt" more with that slight change.
ditto.
