I think keeping the stock tires smaller is just a work around for Jeep to claim better gas mileage. Jeep knows the majority of people are putting some sort of larger tire on but to keep unknowing customers and the EPA happy they keep the tires small so the reported mpg is higher.
This is extremely accurate

meh...the 255/75R17's just looked too small on the Willys to me.

The 285/75R17 look much better, IMHO.

Do you have any issues? I’ve got a stock 2023 Willys 4xe and trying to decide if I can go up to a 285/70/17 or need to go 275/70/17 on my stock rims.

I did have some issues:

1. There was some rubbing at full steering lock and at full suspension articulation. Those were eliminated by a 2.5" lift kit and a small spacer on each wheel which were planned mods.

2. The spare tire rubbed a little on the OEM rear bumper. That was solved by installing an aftermarket rear bumper with an adjustable, swing away, spare tire carrier.

Have you considered doing a rubicon spring swap? That should lift you approximately 1” all around and easily clear 285/70/17. I ran that tire size before my spring swap and it was fine, JLUW. I just wanted extra wheel well clearance for appearance. I’m looking at 285/75/17 along with some small .75” coil spacers on the next upgrade. 35x11.5x17 was also considered, but the oem 17x7.5 wheel back space is a limiting factor w/out having to add wheel spacers. spacers. Rear sway bar connections typically will contact the rim/tire if lifted too high. Here is my current set up, ruby springs on 285/70/17. Mopar LCA’s are going on, as well.
