I think steel vs synthetic is just a personal choice. I have been using steel for 30 years on my Jeeps and trucks and have never had a failure. I use winches quite often around the ranch as well as off road . I have pulled stuck tractors, other jeepers , trees and even a garage onto a trailer Enjoy what you pic and it will be fine I chose steel again ( cant teach old dog.....)

This was the other winch I was looking at with a synthetic rope. Ultimately I felt more comfortable with Smittybilt because of reviews and familiarity- but honestly it looks like a great option as well and was my other top pick.! Thanks!

Winch is going on hopefully this morning so will post pics! Still determining if I will swap for a synthetic rope (harbor freight just sent a 10% off everything of course so I’m going to see what that would look like for a rope and hawse fairlead). Thanks everyone!

Used this coupon and got myself a synthetic rope ? hawse fairlead will be here tomorrow then I’ll swap it out- still saved some money doing it this way!

While we're talking winches I actually got a good piece if advice from a salesman at a dealership. If you opted for the aux switch package, you can use one button for winch in and one for winch out. Unless, of course, you're adding ridiculous amounts of lights, then you'll need those buttons.

Make sure you have a fuse on the hot side near the battery. I wouldn't worry too much about 1 loop on the ground side. Too many loops will create an antenna which could screw with your electronics under heavy load.

Pull the wires in from the hand held plug-in remote and separate the wires based on function. Takes a little work and maybe a few blown fuses, but it's easy after a few beers.

Red wire goes through a fuse to the + side of the battery. Black wire goes to - side of battery.
