Expensive if you're only using it as a dash cam, but I also make content with my dash cams, so it's perfect for me.
10% off if you're military or first responder.
Are there monthly fees? If yes, how much does it cost? And if on 24x7, won't it drain your vehicle's battery?

It's $10/mo or $100/yr. I believe the physical camera holds 24 hours of footage and the cloud holds 24+ total hours of ACTIVE footage (driving/motion alerts/live views/etc..)

It connects to your OBD port and can read your battery level.

Newbie question: Wouldn't that drain the battery if you leave it on even when the car is off or do you mean in parking mode while the car is running?
Dash cams draw so little battery that it would take many multiple days to drain your battery to a point where you can't even start your vehicle anymore.

That's not bad. Can you take some pictures after you have it installed? It will be interesting to see how it is mounted and the wiring.

This would seem to use so much more data than the average smartphone user...how do they do it for only $10/month when phone plans are so much more expensive?

I guess if every single user drove 24/7, but I'm assuming they did their homework and most drivers probably barely drive an hour a day at most. While on our cell phones, we're using data like 16 hours a day streaming and browsing.

Blackvue has a "power magic pro" and thinkware has it build into their cameras.

It's a voltage meter that will kill power to the camera if the battery voltage hits a certain preset voltage. Thus preventing battery drain that'd render the vehicle unstartable.

I've had dash cameras running parking mode in my vehicles for the past 5 years or so. Never once had a battery die.

I was reading that they will replace the camera for free if it is stolen, but a big concern is someone breaking your window or cutting the soft top causing damage to steal the dash cam if you leave it in as a security camera vs remove it when you park your vehicle. Then they will steal anything else since they are already in your vehicle. In other words, it is an invitation to break in. Yes, you will get a video of them, but the priority to catch the person won't be a priority for the police, not to mention the hassle of a broken window / cut soft top. I wish the Owl camera was much more discreet and also supplemental charged via solar.

I keep waiting for a compelling DVR unit. I want to tuck it somewhere out of the rain and away from prying eyes, should also make the cameras themselves more discreet and easy to replace if stolen.

I found one that looks pretty decent (can’t find my bookmark at the moment) but hoping they release an upgraded unit soon.

Update: found it. http://raytis.com/DX1/

That's why all my windows are tinted. You can easily tape over the blinking led light, but I feel better having a blinking led, because that usually means car alarm.

Its always the dick in the lifted pickup with tinted wondow

Either this was an attempt at an insurance scam or this guy isn't a fan of the JL. Regardless, this idiot is one of several reasons why I have a dashcam.

Definitely a hand gesture going on at 17seconds in. What a complete dick move that is. Thats ok, someday he will flip off the wrong person who will end him. There is always a bigger fish in the pond.

As all your windows are tinted , at night you will not see very well , will you ? Be sure to wear sunglasses .

For those of you with dashcams such as Thinkware or Blackbox, did you opt for the rear cam as well and if so have you found a good mounting place

Good idea they can back into you and say you hit them and when the cops come if you cant prove it you will be blamed everytime because you are behind them. that sucks but it always works in their favor
