I wanted to cover the pinch seam/rocker.
I don't like running boards and didn't feel I needed a true rock rail.
They are quite a bit cheaper from Amazon than anywhere else.

Hey those are great. I could have used them last fall, I think a stick popped up and put a little indent in my rocker. Those covers would have been just enough protection.

That's a DIY that I made for my 2015 JK ; it needed only slight modification to move to the JL...
I cut and hinge fuel/water cans that are past their service life to make storage containers.
