Here is something that might interest you. I recently had to update my tazer and also have a Mac. I used a neighbors PC and all went well. Below is a quote from Z-Automotive.

"A recent update to MacOS broke the USB FTDI driver required for the Tazer (and many other small hobbyist electronics) to update over USB. Neither FTDI or Apple has a solution at this time, so for now we're offering an update service. Send it to us and we'll update it to the latest and send it back no charge."
I'm confused about how I got my Tazer to update on my Mac after this. I had do to a full update (restore or whatever it's called) and it took a few tries but it shows the latest firmware.

That said, I've got a DTC and CEL I can't clear maybe related?

I just plugged it in and hit update. Didn't know there were issues. ZPU doesn't tell you of course, and it fetches updates as if nothing is off. If someone doesn't go online search and see issues, they won't know. I just kept updating until it worked. Only later (after it did it's auto update stuff) did I find that it has issues ?‍♂

Hate to jump in someone else’s thread with my issues but it seems like this is kinda a free for all.

I received my tazer yesterday. I downloaded everything to my PC and tried updating it. No luck after multiple tries and almost 3 hours. It just spins the progress icon and goes nowhere. I finally said screw it and went out and installed it. Everything seems to have worked but I discovered something today.

I decided to turn the traction control off for the first time. I was curious if it changed anything with the engine tuning. I did this stopped at a redlight. No issues with one press but I decided to press and hold it as this disables more nanny features in some vehicles. When I did that I get service abs, service stability control and almost every other warning light on the cluster. The engine surged to a higher rpm for a second and went back to normal idle. I drove it about a mile to where I was going and shut it down. When I restarted it everything appeared normal and no issues on the 3 miles home. I went out and tried it again a few minutes ago and get the same results. Anyone have any ideas? Is this some short cut to something in the tazer or just some random glitch that pisses it off? I have not unmarried and removed it yet to see if this stops but I feel like it’s probably related to it. I guess it may not really be a problem but I am curious.

I can live by the old joke if I know there is no other issue.

The doctor says, "Then don't do that!”

This thread is hilarious. The guys helping are solid. The few people who are insanely protective of this product are hilarious. Hahahaha. If you search this product on here it’s clear it causes so many problems with vehicles. #LeaveItStock lol

Unmarry the Tazer, and see if you still have issues. I have had NO PROBLEMS with the Tazer. I bet you don't have any issues.

Sorry to hear Your experience may be different.

Idk about this press and hold on the traction control. I haven't tried that on my Jeep.

Unmarry it, run the software updates again, and if the updates aren't working, for heavens sake, don't plug it in your Jeep!

I was VERY WARY of this product. But I've had zero bad experiences, and absolutely no issues with it. Maybe I've been lucky.

Stock is annoying.

@Jwb211
There's no way I would plug a potentially problematic PROM in my vehicle. I would sort out the update first. Unmarry, update Windows, reboot, reinstall the Z utility, reboot, redownload the latest firmware and try again with a different USB port--a USB 2.0 (not blue) that is on the motherboard connectors. If there's still a problem, I would contact support.

Also, did you do the full reboot and two sleep cycles?

@fellow mac users
This is why I keep my old Microsoft Surface around. Many (most?) things like this only do Windows.

It may not be a problem as everything seems to be working including all my changes. Holding the traction control button down probably doesn’t do anything in the Jeep but I was curious. Ford and Chevrolet both make or have made vehicles where holding it down turns everything off versus one touch just turning traction control off. I had no concerns with using the tazer as I thought it was “the way” until I started reading some on here.

Stock is annoying.

I guess I really didn’t think about the prom being defective or problematic. I just assumed that like half the other crap I get into, windows or some aspect of it was causing the issue. That or the update server was down. I will unmarry it tomorrow and try again. And yes I did a full reboot and two sleep cycles as stated in the papers I printed out.

Thank you both for the reply and input.

A safe assumption! (That's what I meant by my unintentionally vague alliteration)

From what happens with my experience it is normal. If I don't hold TC button for long press I will still have some nanny controls working. All the lights and warnings you have is what happens with mine. When I wheel and need 4 LO I don't like the nanny stuff. What I have found is when the TC button is activated by 4 LO engagement or if I short press it I have some of the nanny stuff working. What I have found out in my case is that if you don't have an updated version, when you long press TC button front axle will not engage. All the lights you commented about light up. You now have low range but only rear wheel drive. Shut off jeep and restart and all is back to normal. I updated tazer to latest version and now when I long press TC button and do a double tap on TC button I have both front and rear axles engaged. So I guess I have a choice now to run in LO range with rear only or both axels engaged. The long press of the TC button operation is listed in your jeep manual. I believe that with the newer JLs that the electronic clutch in TC is different. I could be wrong. All I know is that it now works as I need it to. Hope this helps. I would be curious if this works the same with you.

Here is a quote that I received from Z-Automotive.

"I'm thinking you may have old firmware in your Tazer. In the older firmware, there was a setting called Front Axle which would delete the entire DTCM module when set OFF. This would also kill the lockers and the transfer case position indicator. The old firmware also did not have the ForceAWD when in TrackKill mode.

Please check the firmware and make sure it's updated to the latest version (11.3.6) or at least 11.3.5. Unmarry first before updating in your case, as we want the DTCM enabled but FrtAxle set to NO. Then you can remove the FAD module entirely without issue.

With this new firmware you'd then press and hold traction to kill it altogether; invoking the factory Dyno mode where the factory tests these jeeps on a RWD roller. Double-tapping traction then would toggle you between AWD and RWD."

Yup....

99 percent of those having issues with the Tazer JL / "someone shit talks Z-Automotive", the issue is more often then not, with the person doing the talking and not with the Tazer JL.

Read the instructions, ask questions from fellow user's, ask Joe, via text.... learn what to do with the Tazer JL .....and you will not find yourself here crying foul in regard to the Tazer JL. Yes, rarely is it the Tazer JL ... again, rarely...

I personally have had great customer service from Z-Automotive and if I have contacted them early in the day the response is usually within 10 minutes. I do wish there was someone to talk to on a phone but I can't complain with their customer service.
