I put a Teraflex HD adjustable carrier on my 2012 when I went to the 315/70 tires. It was a very beefy unit. And considering the flimsy hinges that held the cheap lightweight tire carrier to the back of the Jeep, it was a worthwhile investment.

Fast forward to my 2022 Rubicon with the Extreme Recon package; 315/70’s and the Mopar Hinged Reinforcement kit. That tire and rim combination is 105 pounds. If you don’t have something back there to help support the weight; I’d suggest you make an investment. The Jeep JL hinge system is highly upgraded over what the previous model Jeep JK was. So the Mopar kit basically just strengthens the gate itself. Personally I got to put some faith in the Chrysler engineers that what they designed is sufficient for what I’m carrying.

Bottom line, if you are upgrading tires/wheels, I’d recommend so extra support and strength if it’s not already there.
I can’t find the Mopar ad for its previously aftermarket reinforcement but it said 103lbs. Good to know they are ok with 105 now.

I’m looking at putting 35s on my stock JLU Rubicon wheels. Is it necessary to add a tailgate reinforcement?
I know people do it all the time, but stock Rubicon wheels are 17x7.5 and technically not wide enough for 35s. Your local shop may turn you away. You want an 8" wide wheel minimum.

I’ve heard similar about 11.5 versus 12.5 width on 7.5 wheels but nothing on height (33 vs 35). I’ve also heard 7.5 wheels can hold the bead seat better when aired down over 8ā€ wide wheels. My JL is running 35X12.5 on the stock wheels with no problems.

Evidently a repeat post is needed
ā€œStandard guideline for mounting 35/12.50/R17 is on wheels 7.5– 11.5ā€ wide ā€œ
ā€œTire Rim Manufacturers Associationā€

Per DT, who mounted mine, and they Go By the Rules. As I found out the hard way when a high mileage /dollar Michelin on my 4R was refused repair due to being a little over the age limit and had to go elsewhere and pay. 🤨

You dont have to and your tailgate isnt gonna just fall off because you put a 35 on it. But it will close worse, and sag when you open it.
This was my exact experience with 35" tires and stock hinges.
With 37" tires and reinforced hinges and bracket, it still can be hard to close at times.

Seriously look into the Cavfab unit, its still expensive at ~$650 with the forum discount but the gate seriously closes with one finger and the quality on the part is amazing.

Do 35"s fit on the rear tire carrier or is an upgrade needed there too?
