I have the dreaded @! with the stop/start error message. .. reading on this forum , if MIGHT be a low 48 volt battery ? I suppose theres no easy way to charge that and see if thats the problem ?

Anything simple I can try to fix it to avoid bringing it to the dealer ?

Check to make sure all fuses are seated properly. Lots of people have had strange issues all because of a loose fuse or two or three..... Cheap fix if that works.

Good idea, I remember reading to check the fuses before even driving it home, which I didn't ..

If it is loose fuses, and I properly seat them, will the error go away on the next start up, after driving a while, or only if I disconnect the negative battery terminal or something ?

I just checked all the fuses, tons of them were loose. I then started the jeep, and unfortunately the same error message was there.

The check engine light is also on, should I go to the auto parts store and get the actual engine code, I read theres at least two different ones ?

Anything else I can try before giving up and going to the dealer ?

I read on here a lot of people are bypassing the ESS battery, or going dual, or getting one big main battery. I'd like to try to avoid that if I could ... geez . .

Go and have it cleared first, see if it comes back.

There are about 20 conditions that can cause the Start/Stop to not work. They are all listed in your owner's manual.

  • Driver’s seat belt is not buckled.
  • Driver’s door is not closed.
  • Battery temperature is too warm or cold.
  • Battery charge is low.
  • The vehicle is on a steep grade.
  • Cabin heating or cooling is in process and an acceptable cabin temperature has not been achieved.
  • HVAC is set to full defrost mode at a high blower speed.
  • HVAC set to MAX A/C.
  • Engine has not reached normal operating temperature.
  • Engine temperature too high.
  • The transmission is not in a forward gear.
  • Hood is open.
  • Transfer case is in 4L or Neutral.
  • Brake pedal is not pressed with sufficient pressure.
  • Accelerator pedal input.
  • Vehicle speed threshold not achieved from previous auto-stop.
  • Steering angle beyond threshold. (ESS Models Only)
  • ACC is on and speed is set.
  • Vehicle is at high altitude.
  • System fault present.

OK, I read the check engine code. It is P1404 . .. Which says EGR close position ? what does that mean, and how serious is it ?

I cleared the engine codes, and they came back within 30 seconds. Both the CEL and @!..

Guess theres nothing left to do than go to the dealer ?

All of those conditions (other than the ‘system fault’ one) would just deactivate the start/stop system. They wouldn’t cause the error symbol or the “Service start/stop system” message to appear on the EVIC.

OK so the earliest I can get the Jeep in is December 31st .. bummer ..

If i continue to drive the jeep, can I cause ANY damage to anything ? I was even going to do some snow wheeling a few hours away next weekend .. But will cancel if not advised.

Damage is unlikely. Might fail to start at some point, or die, depending on what the actual fault is.
