Stock Muffler Rusting

I was crawling under my Jeep today and saw that my 2021 stock muffler has some rust on it. It seems like I scraped it when crawling and that is where it's starting to rust.

Being that I would like to make it last as long as I can, what do people here suggest? I've seen some Rust-Oleum Aluminum high temp paint that I was thinking about. POR-15 also has some, but is about twice as much. I like POR-15, and think it's probably better quality than Rust-Oleum....but the POR-15 is usually a one-time use and Rust-Oleum has many touch-up jobs that you can do with one can.

Just wondering what others have done and which product to use.

Either of those are a good option. You can also go to your local auto parts store and look at engine exhaust header paint and or engine block paint both are for high temps.

Rustoleum High Heat Paint..... (Not Ultra High Heat Rustoleum) I have been using it for years on my Wrangler's. I do both muffler and tailpipe. Rustoleum is inexpensive and lasts and lasts.. and not glossy.

Initial painting takes about 20 min to do including prep time.

Lightly sand/use steel wool... then clean with alcohol or paint thinner...

Apply multiple light coats.. let coat dry for 3-4 min. before next coat.

No, I do not pull muffler. I use pieces of cardboard to stop over-spray to adjoining areas.

Every 3-4 months, I clean up the muffler and give it a quick respray.

I did this within the first few weeks of ownership. It wasn't for clearance though...just for the sound. I have a manual though. Each ear is different. It has just enough growl, but not obnoxiously loud.

I ended up doing the muffler delete like these folks mentioned doing. Just less crap to drag on something. Just make sure the state you live doesn’t require an annual vehicle inspection unless you want to swap the pipe back and forth

Muffler Elimination Pipe is a way to go... but, if you do a lot of high speed interstate driving the noise/the drone you have with the muffler elimination pipe will drive you/most bonkers.

Around town aok but on the open road at speed.... not so at all.

Yes, I'm 73 yo and am a Harley Fatboy rider.... and am used to noise.. Felt same same about muffler elimination pipe drone at higher speeds even when I was much younger.

and then there is the State Inspection issues associated with the muffler elimination pipe. And most Wives/Gal Pals wouldn't deal well with the drone..

Mine is rusty also, after 4 years sitting under RV shed after I removed it.

Rust Encapsulator from Eastwood has worked well for me in the past.

good idea to paint a stock tailpipe or safe to leave it stock?

Many variables to consider, personal preference, driving/weather conditions where you live etc. Painting helps protect against rust and black helps hide that shinny muffler. The hardware is usually the worst parts for rusting up.

I'm surprised that the exhaust is rusting like it is. I figured the exhaust would be one thing that wouldn't rust on the jeep. I thought they made them out of aluminum now!!

Had I known the exhaust (and hangers) would be prone to rusting, I probably would of hit it with the rust oleum earlier! Eastwood is good too, but the rust oleum is cheaper and easier to obtain.

Scuff with 600 sand paper. wash it off with rubbing alcohol. Then two coats of the paint below.

"aluminum" exhaust.... It is mild steel with a coating. My customers when I was at the exhaust shop had trouble understanding this...


Exhaust parts made from aluminized steel have similar properties to mild steel. The difference is that the metal has an aluminized coating. The coating helps resist rust and corrosion. It is more expensive, but will last longer than mild steel.

Scratch it, it will rust... Expose it to salt it'll rust... Weld it it'll rust... Wait six months you'll find some rust...
