Speaker issue?

Ok I think I figured out an alternative fix. I took double-sided tape (thanks @Chubrocker ) and started the tape by taping it to the outside of the box, wrapping around the wire connectors with tension, and taping the end to the outside of the box on the other side of the wires (shaped like a 'U' ultimately).

On preliminary results, no more rattle--even on "Magic" by The Cars (which someone here said made the rattle during the whole song). Time will tell--I couldn't listen to Sirius talk radio in my apartment's garage.

Off topic but I think double-sided tape is going to be a good investment given the number of rattles that have popped up recently.

Bingo, that's the fix. Yours looks professional compared to mine (if I looked) but the principle is the same, firming up the connector to box junction. I just stuck mine up there like gum under a desk and had the same effect. .

I am at the dealership at this very moment - working with a young tech who hates to lose. He had an app on his phone that just plays tones at different frequencies (don't ask me why he has that app) and he used it to isolate the "hum" to the gateway module and has removed it completely... my interior is in a million parts now. The tech is applying padding around the outside of the module, but he thinks the hum is internal to the module between the plastic components (I will try to post a pic). So far, it looks and sounds encouraging... but not sure if it's something an owner will want to risk.

I did not send a direct message - I'm happy to do so, I'm just confused about why that's required vs a public response for everyone here to see - won't that be more productive?

I'll send a PM now with my VIN in case that's helpful. I don't have intentions to take my vehicle in to the dealership for them to test things on it for days, only to receive it with no fix (per other responses in this thread). My VIN really shouldn't be needed to identify the issue and fix, as the dealers are confirming (at least mine) that it's reproducible in their vehicles, as well. My request is that you work with the dealers to let them know there are many people impacted by this issue, and ask that the prioritize the diagnosis and fix, and keep their customer base updated through you.

Of course, a recall would be most appropriate, but I'm guessing they are avoiding that at all costs since they do not yet have a fix and could not block sales of vehicles on the lots without a fix..

Tape method is working perfectly and takes <10 min once you figure out how to contort your body to reach the problem. I recommend trying it before you let dealers remove parts of the front dash and start messing with the speakers. Just my 2 cents

**Update** Just stepped outside to check and its definitely the Gateway Module. Man, that think hums pretty bad, not sure how just tape resolves it. seems like it would take a lot more to stop it.

Two issues identified in this thread:

1. Noise from physical rattlings/vibrations coming from under the kick panel (tape/adhesive/muffling material is your friend here).
2. Noise from the dash speakers themselves - almost like blown speakers (no known fix yet, perhaps widespread defective speaker issue or incorrect crossover setting sending too much bass to these tweeters).

I can't comment on true speaker issues (#2) as mine doesn't appear to be affected.

How did you manage to get the tape on the gateway module? I've been able to contort enough to see the gateway module but I doubt I could reach it without removing one or more of the kick panels. Did you remove any of the kick panels?

I didn't remove anything. I have attached a markup to hopefully help. Basically, I started by sticking the tape to the outside of the gateway module housing (1) by sliding my finger between module housing and that silver metal cutout. Once I stuck the tape to the outside, then I pulled it taut as I made that 'U' shape over the connectors (2). Finally, I taped it down to the outside of the module housing on the other side of the connectors just like I did in step 1 (can't see it in this photo because of the fabric wires). Takes ~4-5'' strip of tape.

Edit: electrical tape may be better than scotch tape by providing more pressure if you stretch it as you go (like a bungee strap).

Great thanks for the tips. I just went outside and removed the kick panel so I could actually see a little better. I used my phone flashlight (my headlamp would definitely make it easier so maybe later) and I essentially taped from end to end going across the wires with electrical tape. Awesome! Let me know if it works for you too. Did you make the 'U' shape? I think this traction with pull to one side (which is why you need to make sure the tape is pulled taut as you go) is what the trick is. Also, I taped the base near the connectors, not the wires directly.

I was too scared to remove any paneling.

I didn't make the U-shape since I was only using single-sided electrical tape and couldn't figure out a way to get it to stay. Granted I was doing this in my work parking lot so I didn't have a huge amount of tools available but I'll give this a couple days and see if it works. If not I'll go back with a headlamp so both hands are free and look at using some small foam inserts on the physical plug itself and then taping over that with tension
