Ok, more info on this one:

@seguerski helped me pop off the speaker cover on my front driver side instrument panel speaker (on the dash near the windshield) and remove the two phillips screws that keep the speaker in place. From there, we were able to pull the speaker right out from the dash (mine had a decent seal so we had to pop it up a bit to get it out). A small plastic clip connects the speaker wiring.

With the speaker removed, we confirmed 100% that my "Charlie Brown" sound is coming from the front dash speakers. When we disconnected the plastic clip for the speaker wire, the Charlie Brown sound went away.

For a test, we called Fifth Third Bank to listen to the voice recording - this is an excellent way to reproduce the sound. With the speaker plugged in, we could clearly hear the sound coming from the speaker. Once we unplugged the speaker and called Fifth Third bank back, the Charlie Brown sound went away (in that speaker - then we could hear it in the front right instrument panel speaker (dash/windshield).

Our theory is that in the Alpine system, the crossover frequency is not set correctly - and is letting too many low tones through the instrument panel speakers. Probably something Jeep will need to fix with an update to the crossover settings at the amp (messing with your equalizer will not give you access to this).

We also confirmed that the issue is not my specific speakers - @seguerski had a set of fresh, still-in-the-box, exact replacement speakers (verified part numbers were a 100% match) and the issue persisted when we swapped one out.

I don't know much about the car audio world, but I'm wondering if there is a way to add a bass blocker in-line with my wiring to help cut out some of the lower frequencies that the amp is directing to these tweeters - reading this thread gave me the idea (does anyone more knowledgeable than me know?):

Hello everyone,

There was a STAR case created about two weeks that sounds like what you all are describing. I am not trained technician so getting this official diagnose is the best step. Just provide STAR case # S1608000150 during your visit.

Funny how different ways fix this problem. Mine was clearly that harness that I posted yesterday. More to come I guess

Thank you! Appreciate the information!

Any chance you can post details? Could be helpful for us since there are a couple different issues being identified.

Mine too. I heard it pulling out of the dealer. I can't listen to any sports radio or anything with a deep voice because it drives me nuts! I'm going to play with some of these "fixes" to see if I have any luck.

I think the harness is a symptom of the issue because I still get weird vibration up my steering column that wasn't there at first. I think the speakers being out of phase is very possible. I'm going to work with my dealer on the issue.

Your issue sounds just like mine - try popping off that front driver side speaker cover on the dash between the dash and windshield to remove the speaker and see if it goes away.
  1. With everything connected normally, call Fifth Third Bank's automated phone system (1-800-972-3030) and let the voice play for a second - this should be a great way to reproduce the sound
  2. Slide something between the edge of the speaker cover and the dash itself (trim tool, screwdriver, etc), and pry it up - it is held in by 4 clips).
  3. A small (short handle) phillips screwdriver takes out two small screws holding the actual speaker in place.
  4. Lift the speaker out and you'll see the wires are connected with a plastic clip/plug. Disconnect that plug.
  5. Call the Firth Third number again to reproduce the sound - do you notice that it's gone from the front left? Do you hear it in the front right, now?
If you do the above steps and confirm that removing the front left speaker removes the sound from the front left (you may now notice it from the front right), then you've got the same issue as me: a speaker/crossover issue where the amp is letting too much bass get to these front dash speakers that just can't handle the bass.

I believe the only fix for this will be @JeepCares passing the info along for Jeep to release a TSB to correct the crossover at the amp, OR for @JeepCares to pass the information along and Jeep to decide to swap out these speakers with ones that can handle the lower frequencies (bass) that the amp is passing to these speakers.

Either way, it'd be awesome if @JeepCares could acknowledge/test/confirm the above as well - none of us wants to be another guinea pig for dealerships who apparently do not know what they're doing with this (based on reports in this thread).

Great news - just talked with my dealer, he also has a JL with Alpine and he has the same issue. Maybe we'll get somewhere.

Dealer is off today, said he'd check with service dept. again tomorrow, but he has not yet heard of a fix being availabe.

@JeepCares, now that we know at least one dealership acknowledges the issue and has employee owned vehicles with the problem, would it be good timing for you to help "boost" the urgency for a fix? I can provide details via PM if you need the name of my dealership.

I really do not want go through the hassle of leaving my vehicle with them until they have a fix - especially knowing it's not isolated to my vehicle (there's really no reason they should need my specific vehicle given that we can reproduce it in other vehicles), and nobody has had luck with this approach yet.

It's just a royal PITA to take out two car seats/kid mirrors/seat protectors/etc. to move the entire setup out of the JL, into a loaner, and then back into the JL again - would love if we can avoid that, especially since it seems unnecessary since it's not a problem unique to my vehicle.

Thanks everyone for all of the helpful information. My JLUR w/ Alpine has done this since I drove it off the lot. @JeepCares I would love a notification when a quick fix is available at the dealership.

This will make more visits to the dealer than with any other vehicle I have ever owned, and in just under 2 months of ownership. I buy a new vehicle at least every other year by the way.

add me to the list. Only had my wrangler since last saturday and its done it since day 1. My whole steering column vibrates and the charlie brown reverb is most noticeable during sports talk radio and it sounds like it is coming from under the steering wheel. The sound quality of those sports talk shows is terrible. Sounds like the show is coming from a space capsule. I have been using blue tooth. I dont know if carplay alleviates these issues or worsens them. Please help @JeepCares . I dont want to take it to the dealership until i am sure the issue has been diagnosed and can be properly fixed.

Hello everyone,

I just want to reiterate we aren't trained technicians. The STAR case I provided was created a few weeks ago and I believed the symptoms outlined within the case was similar to what you all were experiencing. To answer your question @ aug0211, the dealership is in the best position to share the details. The next best step is going into the dealership to get this inspected for further confirmation. If you end up going and need an additional layer of assistance while in service, don't hesitate to send me a direct message.
