Thanks for all the replies guys, finally got around to reading all of them. I haven't gone off-roading yet, so I think I'll start with some small stuff like a flashlight, med kit, etc... Thanks!!

Always in the Jeep:
jumper cables
breaker bar and 22mm socket to help with tire changes
cellphone charge cable
tire gauge
sunglasses
simple tow strap

When I take a road trip I throw in:
masks and hand sanitizer
paper towels
12v tire pump

(I always have a flashlight on my person)

For camping trips I take a lot more stuff

I would also seriously consider a firearm.
....or a tennis racquet. You could fight off a bear or other critter with a good tennis racquet. Or maybe something like, I dunno, maybe something smaller, easier to carry, and pictured in a Magpul pouch. I suspect it'll handle a bear or other marauding creature. ;)

I also forgot bear spray. I've got a can of bear spray that can reach out 30'. It fits right next to the Elements fire extinguisher between the driver seat frame and door sill.

Hey there! First time Jeep owner here, I was wondering if you guys could maybe list some essentials everyone should have in their Jeeps. This is my first post so please let me know if I did anything wrong, thank you!
Many will say the same I am sure, and perhaps already have! First just like any vehicle:
  • Paperwork - ensure key paperwork such as vehicle info, registration, insurance, park passes, licenses, etc. are readily available
  • First Aid Kit - every vehicle should have one, even just for boo-boos. As you move to more activities with your Jeep expand as needed and personalize (meds etc).
  • Fire Extinguisher - if not for your Jeep, then to help others if safe.
  • Flashlight - small or large, Jeeps have no real interior light!
  • Go bag - Basic needs in case you have to walk or work outside the vehicle / Include ice scrapers, poncho and even a blanket (ground is hard!) Lots of info on suggested items.
  • When going off-road, camping, overlanding (whatever it may be called)
    • Recovery basics such as snatch rope, tree saver, D-rings, soft shackles, tow strap, gloves, jack. A winch is often recommended but having these basics in the Jeep are great. Always use your stuff if your stuck or need a hand, offer to use yours to help others.
    • Basic Tools - a lot on these forums on what to carry. I carry 3/8 socket set, dead blow hammer, various pliers / wrenches, safety glasses, gloves. I keep it minimal, but enough to tackle suspension components and bits. Even spare parts (screws, bolts, etc.), this will grow or shrink as I learn more.
    • Maps - know where you are going and where you can go. Lots here, paper maps, digital (Gaia, OnX etc.)
  • Goodies - JEEP - Just Empty Every Pocket
    • I am set up for camping and fly fishing, and general overlanding. I am still stock in suspension, and tires (JLUR).
      • Tail Gate table - many uses - cooking, prep work, mech work, etc.
      • 67 Designs - phone, tablet and Go Pro on dash
      • Lights - I have the LED package - added KC Driving Lights with amber covers on my winch guard for dust, rain, snow. I have pillar lights as well for ditch lighting.
      • GPS receiver - used for Gaia and OnX maps when no cell service (or when I dont download the maps)
  • The list goes on... but remember to just use the Jeep, it will do more than you expect it even in stock form. You'll get to winches, sliders (for me a must). You'll find a lot here for sure...

Bob has a great list. There are basics that I always have on board and then there are the things I take when I know I am leaving the hard. You can get hundreds of opinions as to what people feel is important. Remember two things, you only live once so go out and enjoy. You only die once so go out prepared. Tailor you items first to your known needs, meds, back up glasses things of that nature and then tailor your list to your environment. If you know it gets up into the 80s during the day but down into the 20s at night you better have items on board to handle both. Water, did I say water, oh I mean water. Food, space blankets, survival sleeping bags. The basic things to keep you alive because the best planned trip can quickly go bad in the boonies.

Is a Hit and Run bag like a body bag you put someone in when disposing of the person you ran over? I imagine this would help keep the DNA out of the jeep.

The lists you guys have blow me away. I’ve honestly never done some of the things you guys do, like drive to Colorado, MOAB, etc.

For me I keep a .45 on me, sharp pocket knife, hatchet, shovel, assorted tools, and some tow straps. For the most part I don’t pack my Jeep for every conceivable event in case we were alone, because if the wheeling is that serious we are never alone.

Food for thought on being prepared for your environment:
I just read an article this evening about a snowmobiler in northern Michigan finding a young North Carolina family of three who all died of hypothermia when there truck got stuck on a rock while following snow mobile tracks after visiting Michigan family members. They had no equipment and no warm clothing. Cost the lives of Mom, Dad, and a baby less than a year old.

The saying goes: Fail to plan, plan to fail

What are the specifics on your Jeep? Obviously 2 door will have less cargo space. Better if you can pull out back seat. I will be building a shelf to put in the back to organize gear. Safety, recovery, and camping stuff. Room for a larger cooler, etc.... Of course your equipment should match your trip as many said.

Well, you're in south Florida, and I'm in south Louisiana. It's hot, humid, flat, no rocks, no fordable rivers, even though we are surrounded by water. Here's my list:

- 4 fishing rods
- small tackle box with both fresh- and salt-water baits
- cast net
- sun screen
- mosquito spray
- hat (or 3)
- flip flops
- extra swimtrunks (usually board shorts, so they can be shorts or swim trunks)
- quality 7" or so buck knife
- fishing stringer

And, yes, those things usually do come with me if I'm just going out wheeling and exploring. Never know when you might find a fishing spot that needs some fish taken out of it!
