....or a tennis racquet. You could fight off a bear or other critter with a good tennis racquet. Or maybe something like, I dunno, maybe something smaller, easier to carry, and pictured in a Magpul pouch. I suspect it'll handle a bear or other marauding creature.

I also forgot bear spray. I've got a can of bear spray that can reach out 30'. It fits right next to the Elements fire extinguisher between the driver seat frame and door sill.

The only caution with the tennis racquet is please make sure the strings are tightened properly. Bears and critters get angry when struck with a softly strung racquet and just get more pissed and will go all McEnroe on your ass.
