there is an option in the screen set up to display what get it is in all the time.
  1. With the Jeep in park, go to screen setup (page 9) on the screen between your gages.
  2. Press OK
  3. Scroll to the one that says Current Gear and select it to on.

You don't necessarily need to be in manual mode. You can have the gear displayed while in Drive in the options menu. I find this very helpful and always have it displayed.

He (and the OP) has different fonts than I do! Maybe because it's a 4xe?

I've the monochromatic TFT screen in my JLU.

When using the AutoStick feature, a single numeral will be displayed, indicating the current gear selection.
When in Drive, a D paired with the current gear in subscript (i.e., identical to what's pictured in the OP's post) will be evident.

You're in 1st gear. Your shifter has been tipped to the left and you're in manual mode. Lol

Hopefully, your weren't going too fast.
The computer in the jeep won't let you shift into gears that can damage the vehicle, it just straight up wont shift if it shouldn't

It clearly shows that it's not in manual mode. You might be confused.

My 2021 4xe displays the current gear like this and I didn't change the setting either. I think this is the default.

Definitely not in manual mode. The "D" indicates it is in auto mode and the small 1 next to the D indicates the transmission has selected 1st gear at this time. It will change as the transmission changes gears automatically. It's a setting you can change if you don't want to see the gear number. It will just read "D' then.
