I am new to the Wrangler and the Selec-Trac on my Sahara. I researched and could not find a straight answer on the 4 Hi Auto speed limit. I have read 45 mph max and any speed.
I know the speed limits for 4Hi and 4 LO but is there a limit for the 4Hi Auto? Can I just leave it on 4Auto all the time or is there a speed limit for it?

no speed limit, you can leave it on all the time, which is why it’s called 4H full time, but why would you want to? Just causes more wear to the clutch pack overtime.

i have 4wd auto on my rubicon the manual said nothing about a speed limit, i keep it on all the time ever since i got it.
You may not know, given your answer, but doesn’t keeping it in 4 auto increase fuel consumption?

i mean fuel cost is still cheap here compared to the uk, but i also did this test when driving from Kuwait to Oman i had to drive through Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and plan on doing it again in august, i had 4000 miles to test 2wd vs 4wd auto, didn't see any difference in fuel consumption, since its in auto it will only send power the the front when the car thinks there is a need for it going in a straight line on the road the car will be acting like it was in 2hi.

Using 4-hi would increase the consumption, but using 4-auto will not. The Jeep uses 2wd unless is detects a need to send power to all 4 wheels.
You can change from 2wd to auto up to 45mph. Same for auto to 4-hi.
You can drive as fast as you like in auto and 4-hi.

Ok let me clarify some things. First of all don’t listen to the guy who claims he has 4 Hi Auto on his Rubicon. The Rubicon uses the Rock Trac system which does not have 4 Hi Auto, so he clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

There is no speed limit on 4HAuto. Essentially what this does is leave the Jeep in RWD but the front axle is attached without being engaged. It has computer sensors checking 15-20 times per second to see if there’s any loss of traction in the rear wheels, in which case it will engage the front axle.

I’ve heard that by simply having the front axle coupled, you do sacrifice approx 1 mpg fuel economy. But no where near what you’d lose by using 4Hi (which you should never ever ever use on dry pavement).

In summer months you are fine leaving it in 2Hi all the time except during heavy downpours. In winter I use 4 Hi Auto whenever there may be snow or ice on the roads.

Not true, export Rubicons can have Selec-Trac.

Sorry you’re wrong there, he’s in the Middle East and just like us in Europe he gets 4 hi auto/Selec-Trac on his Rubicon.

So actually he does know what he’s talking about.

You can get 4 auto in rubicon where he’s from.

Ok my apologies to the poster. Didn’t know that. But .... Why? Why dilute the Rubicon brand? Don’t get me wrong, I think the SelecTrac system is fine and very capable, I’ve twken my off-road in some pretty bad conditions and it’s fine. But the Rubicon is meant to offer the pinnacle in Jeep engineering. Why do this???

We get a Rubicon with smaller tyres, lower fender flares, cv joints, selec-trac and other differences, narrower axles, no e-torque etc. It’s still the most capable off roader on the UK market and will probably still be when the much ā€˜teased’ new Land Rover Defender is launched with it’s IFS etc.
We don’t have the national parks/deserts/trails to exploit the potential of the full spec US Rubicon and the current model is already far too expensive really in the UK. You have to really WANT one!

It’s just different, I’m very happy with mine.
