Rough Country Compressor

I've never understood the idea of purchasing those tiny little twin air compressor setups. I mean sure you can hide them a lot better and they take up less space, but as much as they're charging for them, you can get way more bang for your buck and way faster air up with a slightly bigger system.

I get the whole size thing, though I just don't understand why you would want to pay more money to spend more time airing up, when you can spend less money to spend less time airing up! Kind of sounds like a win-win to me!

I have a couple of buddies who run Thors. They are good but huge and hideous when mounted. I have no issues spending the money on ARBs since they are a clean install on a vehicle that doesn't have much room to work with.

This is a direct replacement:

Just take the cover off of the compressor (which is a little fiddly). Then locate the switch which looks just like the replacement. Unplug the two wires. Unscrew the switch. Then put the new one in its place with some Teflon tape on the threads. Plug the wires back in. If it doesn't work, you might need to swap the wires on the switch's terminals. Though, in theory it should work either way.

Honestly I'll probably keep this El cheapo $50 VEVOR single compressor air pump for at least till the end of the year for sure. I do want to get the Thor system at some point though. Just the ability to set my compressor to a specific PSI and let it do its thing, is kind of nice. With the Napa one you would save 50 bucks, but you can't set it to a PSI and walk away. You actually have to sit there and watch it.

As much as I love saving a buck, ease of use is big for me! Though at this point, thanks to @Camaroboi13 I'll be making my own hose system instead of buying the Thor's lightning one for an extra $100 over what it would cost me to make my own.

My pressure switch and air chucks came in yesterday while I was at work. The air hose should be here today sometime. Although more importantly I’m waiting for a phone call from the vet as my 10 year old basset/beagle mix can’t put any weight on her back legs anymore. I’ll work around that as I wait for this hose to come in.

Yep, the auto set is cool but honestly, once I connect the 4 houses, flip on the ARB and do my post routine, I am at running pressure and on my way. I mean...except for rolling up 4 houses is like fighting an octopus and takes longer than anything.

Hope she makes a full recovery. Similar issue with our cocker a couple months back when she slipped a disk and she is slowly recovering.

Likewise. The younger one has the play drive like no other, and I think she takes it a little too far sometimes with her wearing out the older one. We’re on the waiting list for openings, but lucky for us the vet is only 4 minutes from the house. Our pool guy just came and brings cookies for the pups and it was relieving to see her attempt to run to him. So whatever issue is going on it didn’t stop her from trying to run which is encouraging.

On a week long wheeling trip this past fall, one of the compressors started to blow a fuse immediately after turning it on. I pulled the compressor and harness. I checked the harness for connectivity. Both positives and the negative are fine. I checked the positive to negative- open loop. Visual inspection showed no issues with damage to the wires around the compressor. My assumption is there is a short in one of the compressors.

I emailed Rough Country about the 3 year warranty. We'll see what they say.

I have heard that RC has taken a HUGE effort in the last few years to improve quality of their parts, and customer service. Good luck!

Try cleaning the air filters. They aren't the best design. Even though they are about 1.5" diameter. The air only flows through about a quarter inch of them. So they can clog quickly. I am going to mod my filters at some point to get more airflow. Just haven't come up with a design yet

Update:

After contacting Rough Country and explaining the same I posted here, they agreed to send me a new compressor. I was surprised they did not ask me to send the old one in for verification. It did take a few weeks to arrive, but it was also the holiday season so I assume they had some stock issues. No worries.

The new one is different, like the pictures on the website. It has a cover now and a braided hose that exits from the front of the compressor.

Other than that, it seems to be the same. Same mounting holes and harness. I installed it using my old harness and turned it on, works fine. The only issue I have is now my hoses don't connect as they go to the middle of the compressor rather than the front. I have to change some connectors which I didn't have at the time, so I'll have to finish the project another day.

Hopefully this one lasts longer than the first one.

I just saw this. I don't understand why this would cause one of the fuses to blow 1 second after turning it on. Repeatedly. I would expect the compressor to run sluggishly and have a lower output.

They did have different filters on the new one. I used them. I have no idea if they are new and improved or just look different.
