I bought a used 21 JLU that only came with one key. The dealer wanted $400 for a second one. I declined because I thought I could get it cheaper else where. However, I found out that manufacturers don't release the rights to reproduce until after 5 years. Has anyone else required a second key to be made? How much did it cost?

You can buy a key for around $50 and have it cut for around $20. The tricky part is the programming and is probably what a lot of the $400 is for. I am curious to see if others chime in with other options to program a FOB outside of the dealership....and if a pre-used FOB can be re-programed for a different JL.

Check Costco. We have a key replacement van that shows up in their parking lot every month or so. But they wanted around $350 for the whole package. I bought a fob from Amazon and my Jeep dealer charged me $150 to program it - with the risk they would charge that whether it worked or not. Other locksmiths that could do the programming wanted around $200 with the same risk.

Programming involves accessing the Jeep database to get the required pin number and not too many locksmiths can do that.

For models a few years older than ours you might be able to program a fob with JScan.

No third party locksmiths will be able to program a new fob until Mopar releases the rights.

Related question... I have had cars in the past that if you had two working key FOBs you could buy and program a 3rd key yourself? Is that a thing with the JL's? I know this will not help the OP, but it seemed a good time to ask the masses if it is still possible. My guess is that it is not possible to do this anymore...

Not possible. Soon you will need to buy a new RF module also because they are locking out any new keys with software as a theft deterrent.

Toms key is awful - stay away - there "photo" cutting service does not work - tried with multiple cars - I paid $350 using a mobile service that came to my driveway . Thats the cheapest I could find in my area.

Not saying this is the case here but if you finance a used car through a used car lot they will sometimes keep the second key and tell you they only have one incase they need to repo the car in the future for non-payment. After the loan is paid they throw away the other key.

Have a friend who runs a Used car lot. He had a guy who did a key for my 2021 for $225.00 including the FOB. Have to have one original key and fob.

Back in my younger/poorer days we bought a used Ford Exploder Sport from one of those buy-here/pay-here lots, total POS. Anyway, we were told there was only "one key for it" - no big deal, it did use transponder keys, I figured I'd get a new key made for it later. When we started talking finance terms, my wife and I decided we had juuuusssst enough cash to buy the car outright and not get the %15 apr loan they offered for it. When we wrote a check, the finance guy told us "Cool, now you guys can have the second key..." So yeah, it's a thing - they will try and keep the second key to use to repo the rig if you don't pay.
