I have almost 5000 miles on my 2018 3.6 Auto JLUS and notice this knocking/clattering all the time in town. It's mainly in 1st-3rd at low RPMs. Took it to the dealer and they "couldn't reproduce the issue". I was told the engine will make normal break-in sounds for the first 15,000 miles.

I don't get on it too often in an attempt to get better MPG in town... but from the sound of it seems I should be attempting to get the revs up to avoid this? Most gas stations only offer 91 octane around here... has anyone had success with that versus 93? I've just been running 87... which should be fine, but if it helps the clattering at low RPMs I'd go with 91.

It would be great if Chrysler would come up with a solution for this. My Wrangler sounds like it's about to drop its transmission when I'm driving through neighborhoods. Kind of embarrassing.

I run BP 93 almost exclusively. I rarely hear it in mine as long as I'm running a high quality high octane.

Hi RubyRed, I can certainly understand where you are coming from! What dealer did you speak with and when was the last time you were there? We are happy to help, feel free to send us a private message so we can discuss further.

Hi everyone. In my experience, I can pretty much 100 percent confirm that the pinging/rattle can be eliminated by the type of gas. Just to confirm - mine had the low rpm, ping/rattle around 1100 - 1400 RPM under acceleration / load. Here's where it gets interesting. I have always run (and I'm in Canada) Petro Canada gas 87. This gas has up to 10 percent ethanol, for the record. After a while, I would get the rattle. I read a lot about Shell 91 being the best - and it does not contain any ethanol. Anyway, 4 tanks and I still had the rattle, in fact, it got a bit worse. I then filled up with Petro Canada 91 and it went away completely. My point being, I'm not sure if octane level matters - the Jeep is just picky with gas and you just have to experiment and find the right one. Hope this is helpful.

I think air temperature makes a big difference. I heard the knocking a lot until the air temp dropped into the 40's in November. Now it's pretty much gone.

I have the same issue also. The noise started about 8000 miles , ruffly about 4 or 5 months ago. i currently have 10700 miles. I just got my JL back from my dealers service department. I was going to the dealership for over a month and they could not figure out what the issue is. They kept saying it was heat shields and adding clamps to my heat shields and it did not resolve the problem. Finally they gave me a loner and had my truck for the past 3 weeks to finally give it back without the problem resolved. They said that the drive 2 brand new jeeps and had the same sound. I was told that all jeeps make that noise and sent home with the same rattling noise. Its sounds like a car with a bad distributor cap

Hi Rob,
As customer care, we do rely on our dealers to identify and address vehicle concerns. With that being said, we can escalate a case for you and connect you with a Case Specialist to have this looked into further. We are available via PM if this would be of interest.

Thought I’d chime in. My 2018 JLU Rubicon has been doing this for the last 6 months or so. Like everyone else it seems temperature dependent and is impacted by fuel octane. I now run 93 octane and it’s mostly taken care of, but it will still suffer from mild predetonation. Thing is, this should get fixed with a TSB. How can we consumers unite and get Chrysler to address this design flaw???

Like Ive post on a different thread. @JeepCares Please let FCA know about the issue, this problem is all about the AIR/FUEL RATIO, the engine is running too lean that's why when the engine heats up to normal operating temperatures (between 200-220 degree) the lean mixture burns faster than it should at low rpms cause not enough fuel is getting into the cylinders. The air/fuel ratio mixtures has to be updated to a little richer ratio mixture and the problem will be solved, but JL Owners we will have to sacrifice a bit of mpg.

Higher octane = the more compression and temperature fuel can withstand. Using higher fuel octane won't eliminate the problem it will only diminish the misfire. The solution is to update the air/fuel ratio to a bit more richer mixture.

Lean mixture are known to cause pre-ignition (misfire) and hotter engine temps. A bit richer mixture will make our engines run a bit cooler and the more fuel in the cylinder the less possibility of pre-ignition but will sacrifice some mpg.
