Wanted to post an update on my "engine knocking". So far, both the dealer and Jeep Cares have been attentive to the issue. The initial conversations between the dealer and FCA was that they believe its "spark knock", but there hasn't been any definite diagnosis and/or an answer as to why would there be spark knock on a brand new engine. The dealer said they "cleaned" the engine by giving it a "deep soak" and that I should use a few rounds of premium gas (specifically Shell or BP). I picked up my Jeep right before Christmas after the engine cleaning and I was already on my 2nd tank of premium gas, and as soon as I hit the road, the engine knocking was still there. I am currently on my 6th tank of premium gas. On a side note, after my first tank, my MPG dropped to 12.5 MPG and I am hovering at 13.5 and the best I see is about 14 MPG. The engine knocking (if that is what it actually is) has been someone mitigated, but still ever present. I am dropping the Jeep back off at the dealer this evening and we will see what happens.

Thanks for the update, premium helps but hasnā€™t resolved my issue either, keep us posted, hope they get it sorted or come out with a fix soon!

The engine knocking problem (misfire) that most of us have in our Wrangler its a tuning problem, the air/fuel ratio is too lean and that is what causes the knocking/misfire, it only happens when the engine reaches normal operation temperature (between 200-220 degree or higher) that's when the system is running as lean as possible for better fuel economy, when the engine is cold the pcm is working on an open loop so the engine is running richer and no knocking or misfire is present. What FCA needs to do is UPDATE the PCM with better TUNING.

I completely agree, unfortunately software and tuning updates take forever for EPA approval. I sure hope they get it resolved soon!

Same thing just happened to my Jeep, its been 3 days at the dealership and they are going to "deep soak" the engine because apparently there's some carbon buildup that they believe its causing the engine misfire (only 6850 miles). I told them that I strongly believe that the problem is because the tuning is too lean but as long as FCA doesn't come out with a bulletin or recall the dealership "can't" do anything about the tuning. Hope that the "deep soak" works!

Just saw your post. Well, let me tell you that the deep soak will not work (I am sorry). I asked how much carbon was in the engine and the response "not a lot". I dropped the Jeep back off to the dealer this past Monday afternoon (Jan. 7th) after they had completed the "deep engine soak" and after about 6 tanks of premium gas (Shell only) and although it was slightly mitigated, it was still knocking strong. My Jeep is still at the Dealer now going on 7 days later. Jeep Wave/Cares called me Wednesday to tell me they were trying to get an update, but had not heard back from the dealer. The dealer has not called me once. I called the dealer Thursday and the only information they could give me was that the technician was waiting for a response from FCA as to what their next step should be and that the Tech could not replicate (although they had already admitted they heard it the first time I brought it in and they all have the video that I posted on the forum). I called Friday and Saturday and nobody would call me back and I haven't heard back from Jeep Wave/Cares since Wednesday. I will update as soon as I find out what the "next" step will be, but all I can say is, keep pushing them. Something is really wrong and they need to either fix it or replace it. Any new car should not be having engine, transmission or drivetrain issues mysterious or not and especially not on $55,000 Jeep! It's also pretty obvious that its more than just a couple of JL's having the same problem, so time for them to take it seriously. Good luck, please keep me posted on your situation. @JeepCares Also, if you haven't done it already get a case # with Jeep Cares and have them escalate it.

UPDATE!!

So I finally picked up my Jeep from the dealer, they deep soak the cylinders over night and clean them the next morning, cleaned the fuel injectors, cleaned the throttle body and change the PCV Valve that was getting stuck open cause it had oil build up. So far I couldnā€™t hear any misfire and the engine feels stronger. Hope this has fixed my Jeep permanently!!

@BriBerk did the dealer you took your Jeep at change the PCV valve?? I read that if the valve fails it could cause misfires. Hopefully thatā€™s what your Jeep is missing.

I will update in a few days to let you guys know how everything is going!!

Did they say it was the PCV valve itself failing? Ir is the engine doing something to cause it to fail?

They believed that there is a big possibility that the valve itself fail by getting stuck open and was causing the misfire. So far this is day 2 and the engine is running great with no pre-detonation heard!

Does anyone know which is the correct part? I'm thinking about just swapping it myself and seeing if it fixes the problem.

Jennifer,

It would be very helpful if a TSB could be released to help get our dealers to move on this.
