How long would it take for me to get a full charge if I plug in when I get there? And would it be bad form for me to even use those chargers since our Canadian friends have farther to go to get to the mountain?
A full charge on level 2 is around 2.5 hours, but I'd say using a free public charger on a PHEV is kinda rude since EVs _need_ them but for PHEVs they're just a bonus.

I'd consider a 4xe since the only charging station it would see is my garage, but I'd hate to be thrown into the charging jungle of a full EV - especially on a long trip. The 4xe owners I've spoken with are very pleased with the power delivery. I've read about some reliablity issues, but it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff on those things - could be the vocal minority. Some folks would cite reliability issues with their pet rock.

Really?

I typically see more BEVs just blocking level 2 chargers because they don't need the juice since they have a couple hundred miles range.

A lot of public chargers near me restrict charging to 2 hours, the cost of charging is also a deterrent. Government chargers have no time restriction, private lots paid and free usually have time restrictions. Paid and free tend to charge an over time limit penalty.

Level 2 - Paying to charge a PHEV is generally cheaper than using gas, paying to charge a BEV is typically more expensive than home charging, this is probably why BEVs choose to use the spots as priority parking, and don't bother plugging in, even at free chargers, because for some it's such a waste of time to plug in a BEV on a level 2 even if it's free.

Desperate for juice with a BEV, just do a quick top up with a super charger, why waste time.

This is on purpose, the same people pushing EVs, do not think the masses should be driving private vehicles, they are also the same people that want to ban cheap electricity.

So it's almost as if it's a scheme to ween people off of vehicles.

Charging subsidies seem to be mostly about funneling tax dollars to some private people.
I bet soon we see free elecrtic cars on each sidewalk like those stupid skate board things.

Check out the BEV videos, BEVs think level 2 is a waste of time, and just prefer to use level 3 on long trips. Not exiting the highway to sit at a Starbucks for 7 hours waiting for a level 2 to juice them up a bit.

This is as insane as a 4xe on a road trip exiting every 15 miles to sit at a charger for 2 hours rinse repeat.

A BEV should really never be in the position to be desperate to use a level 2 charger.

Level 2 are called destination chargers for a reason, in a public setting they are more of a courtesy than a fuelling station.

I volunteer a three times a week at the Mayo Clinic. I transport visitors around the 400+ acre campus on a three-row golf cart. Mayo has sixteen charging stations: twelve employee ones requiring cardkey access to a parking garage and four public chargers where anyone can access them.

The employee chargers consistantly demonstrate responsible use: If you park there invariably you are charging your vehicle. The public ones are a weird free-for-all. And, on any given day they are all full. I'm a curious sort, so I've made a habit of monitoring the visitors habits. On average. there is always one ICE vehicle occupying a charger spot. I don't know if this is out of naivete or some sort of Luddite protest. But...even more interesting is the behavior of the EVs. More than half the time, there are two EVs simply parking, not charging, and taking up all but one of the remaining slots. I've even seen EVs, down to the last gasp of power, after making it to the charging station only to find them full, and then have to be towed away because two spots are EV "parkers".

Is this our future? To be fair, there is no sign that says "EV charging only", but wouldn't that be obvious? Once EVs become more common this will become a bigger issue. I know that there is no honor amongst thieves, but isn't there honor amongst the EV's brethren? And...why are the employees so well-behaved compared to the public? Is it because they know each other?

Has anyone else witnessed this type of thing?
Noticed a similar issue myself. People are weird, man.

One other issue I forgot to mention. Psychotic public charger behavior.

Between militant hyper milers who simply cannot accept that Jeep makes an EV now, to truck bros (like the Gladiator above) that intentionally park in public charging spots, you can run into some really weird people when using public chargers.

The Prius photo was from this morning. Came into the office for my 9:00 meeting, left at around 9:30. Somehow, in that timespan, someone else in the office complex decided to come into work, and park in the one spot immediately adjacent (with four other chargers nearby unused) and block my door. Brilliant.

Freaking brilliant.

EV chargers should be in worse parking spots. That will fix it.
They only seem to be the "best parking spots" because they are EV charging, the reality is they are located where they are because of easy access to the power supply.

Some chargers I use are a couple of levels down on a back wall.

So the "best parking spots" are more psychological blind spot than reality

I am sitting here in the hospital with my wife and the EV spots are immediately opposite of the handicap van accessible parking equidistant from the door. Expectant mother parking is further than the Teslas.

Yeah, I didn't mean to compare a PHEV owner actually charging to a BEV owner just being a jerk. :)

I leave the public chargers to the BEVs, because I don't _need_ to charge there but a BEV owner might legitimately need the charge. If some jerk blocks the spot I left open, that's on them.

A BEV should never put themselves in a situation where they are desperate for a public level 2 charger.

That is like driving around on fumes, then running out of gas, and having to walk miles to beg for a few hundred oz of gas using a Yeti tumbler, but thanks for leaving the spot open for the rest of us PHEV people.
