I just installed a charging station for my sister EV and it was a 50 amp circuit. Most houses don't have the capacity to add a 50 amp circuit.
If 75% of garages had EVs and they where told to only charge at night now we would have rolling black out night.
Her EV can't even make Lake Tahoe from the SF bay area with out stopping to charge.
As soon as you start hitting mountain roads your range is cut by a 1/3.

Nuclear is by far the safest and most effective source of power. I could start up and shut down a reactor plant with 2 people in about 45 minutes. It is the most environmentally friendly, stable, and efficient option we have.

The problem that you don’t want to address is total volume. When the battery capacity of 100+ million cars exceeds the total capacity of all power plants in America, what are we to do? Go to sleep? Pretend it isn’t true?

93 Y O FIL with a walker and dementia has a Dr. appt. Handicap spots full, the nearest open spot is in the south 40. Park and see if he makes it- he hasn’t. Drop him off and hope he doesn’t wander off by the time I park and get back- he has. Illegally park and take the time to walk him in and sign him in risking a ticket ? Miss the appointment and have to reschedule for possibly the same results next time ?
I’m open to suggestions 😖
He has passed, but my, or your turn could be coming.
The designated EV spots without chargers are stupid, about 10 years ago they popped up a few places, here it would be Green Car Parking Only, my 2007 was Jeep Green, I parked in the Green Car parking only, those spots are obviously put there by idiots, maybe the government gave them a tax break to mark spots like that.

I have been falsely accused of “blind hatred” for EV’s. This is the type of BS I have Blind Hatred for. Not free choice. I highly suspect I am not alone.

Yes, the two (summer & wildfire season), in CA are synonymous 😉
I know this as I lived the first 56 of my years there.
California summer AND wildfire season is from March until the end of November. The other months if we are lucky are rainy (but if it rains a lot we get more vegetation to burn later; if it doesn’t rain the vegetation is dryer and more likely to burn later). The fires do screw up some of the offroading, though.

I don’t understand how it’s even debatable. Hybrids are the best option we have for the foreseeable future. Anyone who is capable of reason and honesty can see this.
As soon as the "all right thinking people" or "people capable of reason" posts start, this stops to be a discussion, and begins the spiral into political discussion. Prepare for the locking....

There are 239 million licensed drivers in the US. 283 million registered vehicles in 2022. (Most recent data I could find quickly)

Typical passenger vehicles with a battery capacity of 40-70 kWh, with these new heavy trucks coming it at near 200 kWh or more. Even assuming a conservative average of 70kwh per vehicle, and people don’t drive 300 miles a day. Let’s be nice and say 15kWh per day per vehicle. Thats about 20 miles worth. Thats 3,585 TWh of energy.

4,178 TWh was the total energy production of the US in 2023.

The blanket banning of “political” discussion on something so heavily regulated and government manipulated as electric vehicles is absurd.

I have no idea why some people continue to make blanket statements like overwhelming the grid. Its like they never put any thought into it or question it, or maybe they do just mindlessly accept what their favorite media source spouts without questioning it. Lots of misinformation and ignorant assumptions there. My local gas station could also be overwhelmed if everyone in the neighborhood shows up for gas at the exact same time...but they don't.

Electric demand isn't steady, it varies throughout the day and night. Prior to a high speed charging station being installed, the local utility deems if the distribution system can handle it. I guess you aren't familiar with Time of Use charges some electric utilities charges either. When demand is low, the electric utility charges cheaper rates, for example 10pm-6am on the east coast, or maybe during the afternoon in California when they have excess solar generation.
I live in southern California. I am very familiar with our outragious electricity rates depending on current time of day. In fact, the only time you're *saving* money with an electric vehicle here vs an ICE is if you're charging it during off peak hours or are getting free electricity. It gets over 68 cents a KwH out here during peak times. It's insane.

Here’s a whacky number for you. 33.7kWh=1 gallon of gas per the EPA. 4,178TWh/33.7kwH =123,976,261.1 gallons of gas. How many millions of gallons of gas can we consume in a year? Well, more than 9 million barrels per day.

I will never understand the emotional attachment people have to topics that are simply machinery and numbers. There aren’t any moral value judgments to be made in these arguments.
