if my dog can't go, i don't go. i'd never take the chance and leave him in a car even with it running with the AC on. finding places that pets are welcome gets a little tricky and sometimes you need to go off the beaten path a bit. many of the main paths and attractions at national parks aren't pet friendly.
Agreed. Never, ever leave a pet unattended in a vehicle even with the AC running. Not cool.

Never ever? Not even for 5 minutes? These scenarios need to be defined. What if it is cold outside. I see dogs in vehicles all the time. My dog used to hang out in mine often. I was smart enough to understand the situation not to endanger her.

I get it… a person in Phoenix has a different perspective than a person from Seattle.

While I agree with the others about the risk, I'd also be worried that some dog lover would see the pooch in your vehicle on a hot day and bust a window to "save" them not realizing it was cool inside.

I built a pet parking lot AC unit for my truck a few years ago. It had an electric radiator fan blowing thru a car AC evaporator, with PWM fan speed control, temperature probes and hoses running to a large ice chest with a pump, in the bed of the truck. In there was water, cooled by ice. Unfortunately, I underestimated the BTU shedding of a warm day's air flowing through this evaporator. I could get about an hour out of a 120 qt chest, half full of ice water. It was fun to build, but I never put it in use. It would just be easier to run the engine. Undoubtedly more reliable as well.

The only time I’ve left a pet in the vehicle was when I left a person in the vehicle as well. Most vehicles shutoff after 10 minutes these days or if something should go wrong, not worth risking the life of a pet.

I’d be super cautious with a portable AC just for reliability concerns. When I do leave my dogs in the Jeep I just leave it running and take the fob with me locking the doors as I leave. I always keep the Jeep in eyesight as we eat or just run in the store quickly for some groceries or whatever. It limits what we can do but it’s worth it to have my buddies with me.

I do this all the time with my two dogs. I gradually worked up their time alone, to where they can go an hour easy.

When we go camping, my younger dog doesn't care if she stays in the camper or the car. My older dog is a rescue and has anxiety. We once tried to leave him in our camper for a very short period of time and he barked constantly after just a few minutes. He doesn't seem to mind if he's left in a car with the AC on. As long as he has a window to look out of, he's happy.
