In 1965, when I was 16 yo, I got the bright idea to do this on my '65 Mustang. Poked a hole in the oil filter and then could not get the filter off. Went to take the filter off with big mouth pliers and the filter crushed..

I walked 2 miles to a mechanic at a small shop down the road. He drove me home and he managed with a lot of work and assorted tools to get the filter off..

I learned the hard way then, when young, you do not poke a hole in an oil filter and also you do not drain oil out unless you know you can get the fill plug open.

.
Apparently you do not know how to remove oil filters. Anyone knows you should at least loosen the oil filter first So you know you will be able to remove it. As for the drain plug being removed, well if you don’t have the common sense to remove the fill plug first.

You have a lot of young guys and gals and even older on this forum that have never changed oil on a vehicle or fluids on anything for that matter...

When they read a post like yours saying "Simple trick that helps with oil filter removal. If you have the oil filter on the underside of the engine, take a good size center punch and hammer and drive the punch into the center of the oil filter to drain the oil out from the filter before removal" they read the suggestion and go do just what they read.. and in this case not loosen the filter first...

Anyway, when I author a post, I keep this in mind..

whoah, this is a light-hearted thread...no need for arguments or abrasion. Let's all break for some more coffee...yes, young'uns these days wanna lock horns about nearly everything. The need to feel 'right' or 'correct' in a public forum is strong for many. Personally, I don't give a shit nowadays...if you say 2+2=9 I say "have a nice day". Saves me from getting stirred up...cheers!

My APIA showed me that trick for a Lycoming O360 engine, worked like a charm (aviation ref)

I can change the oil in my 5.3 GMC Sierra in about 10 minutes...GM's engineers didn't 'punk' us when it comes to maintenance. They still make everything simple & accessible for oil changes
Wellllllll, yeah they kind of did. The oil filter on a 5.3 is still a spin-on that makes a mess.

And if you have an 8-speed or higher, it's a thermostat-controlled transmission that can't just be drain/filled without extra work, just like the JL's...

And the diffs, while I appreciate they used paper gaskets to save money, the lack of a drain plug on both front and rear sucks. They could have used nice reusable gaskets like the JL has.

Been there/ done that on GM full-size ;) They're no easier to work on.

Jeep bought the diesel from a 3rd party manufacturer. They didn't spec details like that.

At 16 years old, you had a brand new 65 Mustang??? If you tell me it was a Shelby, I'll have to throw myself off the nearest lifted Jeep!

@au176

Just a regular 1965 Mustang 2+2 in the color red it was. 283 engine....Had black interior. I walked into the local Ford dealership with a box full of cash. I was 4'11" and 101 lbs. at the time and when I walked into the dealership show room no salesman paid any attention to me. Finally, one sales guy walked over and said hi to me and I told him I wanted to buy the red 2+2 sitting on the show room floor. He smiled but really really smiled when he saw the cigar box full of cash.

Anyway, the sales guy called my Dad, a local business owner and my Dad said it's his money and if that car is what he wants to buy, sell it to him. My Dad told him that I had worked lots of hours to earn the $2761.00.. Yes, the 2+2 was $2671.00..

Had that Mustang for about a year or so and ended up totaling it. Then with another cigar box full of money, I walked into a Chevy dealership and purchased a new blue 1968 Corvette convertible with 427 hp for $4000. Had that about a year and then off to Vietnam I went. I sold the Vette right after I was drafted and before I went overseas..

My 1st Jeep vehicle was a Willy's M606 that was assigned to me by the US Army when I was overseas.

love that old fastback AND that '68 BB roadster. I was lucky to grow up in a family with a classic car dealership so I was driving classics without a license to car shows & swap meets...and sneaking out every kind of car imaginable back in the 80's. Minus the exotics, I've been in / driven them all...some were perfect and some not-so-perfect. I miss the old cars and sold my '67 Camaro last year...no toys at the moment 😪

I haven't been comfortable with the idea of a Fumoto drain plug on an off-highway Jeep. So after some research I stumbled upon the ValvoMax triple seal system. To get the oil to come out you need to use a provided screw-on fitting with an attached hose to lift a spring loaded ball valve. When you're done draining the oil, there is a screw-on cover with a double seal. Like the Fumoto valve, it does stick out/hang down more than the drain plug, but it's well protected by my MetalCloak skid plate.

Secondly, you've been pitching the DEF 2.5 gallon containers ... yes? Hmmm ... 2.5 gallons equals 10 quarts. Your diesel contains 9 quarts. Why not use a tube on the Fumoto or ValvoMax valve to drain the oil directly into an empty DEF container? Take the DEF container, full of oil, to your local oil recycling facility ... O'Rileys in my case. After leaving the oil behind you can simply pitch the DEF container with zero clean up invloved.

In the interest of full disclosure; I still have one free oil change on my Jeep, so I haven't done this yet. However, the ValvoMax valve is in the "to be installed box" and empty DEF containers keep showing up in my garage.

Speaking of DEF containers ... did you know that the disposable, screw on, expandable tube, that comes with each DEF container will fit the gallon jug that your windshield washer fluid comes in???
Yep, use one to prevent spilling ... that I've been using and it works great ... and it's free!!

Good to know...I've never 'pitched' DEF in any various vessel...I reuse a 2.5 gal DEF bottle myself and refill it from the 3k gal bulk tank at our shop. We run (10) Peterbilt 579's so we have a fuel island w/bulk DEF

DUDE! Adjusted for inflation that $4000 in 1968 becomes 36,758.51.... wish I could get a corvette for that!! Looks like the cheapest new one locally is about 75k.

that's the exact drain pan I got and my plug was removed and it still overflowed!!! That pissed me off so I drilled out 2 more holes to compliment those 2 lil piss ant drain holes it came with! I even had the breather plug cap off so it could breathe...gheez
I have the same pan, when changing the oil in my 5.0 mustang, ford brilliant engineers decided a 1” plastic tooless drain plug was the answer, 10qts drain out in a few seconds. I remove the drain cap before draining the oil. It flows plenty quick for that, I’m sure it’ll drain more than fast enough for you.
