I think the engineers who designed this little powerplant hate those of us who do maintenance on them. I'm installing a Fumoto valve this oil change to keep things easier / cleaner going forward. First time I changed the oil I had hot oil overwhelm the top basin of my 16 quart drain pan faster than it could drain into the primary holding tank...it filled up and flowed over onto my garage floor before it could all drain into the primary holding tank. So I drilled out the drain holes in the drain pan BIGGER hoping they will keep up with the volume of oil leaving the Jeep's crankcase once the oil pan's drain bolt is removed in the future. The new Fumoto with a drain hose down into the drain pan's primary holding area should be nice & tiddy. I'm still trying to figure out how to make removing the inverted oil filter a 'clean' affair? Any tips? The fuel filter isn't hard...just stinky and sort of messy. Anyways, does anybody else cuss these VM engineers when turning a wrench on these things? 🤪

I haven’t had that issue and actually I find changing the oil filter cleaner than the old metal ones on my old cars. I just let the motor sit for about 30-60 minutes before draining and removing and it works great!

actually… (and I’m nocking on wood here) but I rather like working on this rig. I mean things are always a PITA but it’s normally pretty straightforward with all the fluid changes and maintenance items.

that being said I haven’t had to dig into the motor or trans (THANK GOD) but serviceable stuff is pretty great!

Hey there 👋
Couple tips
1) regarding oil filter, unscrew/loosen until almost removed, but do not remove, that will be last before adding Oil. Let oil drain
2) fumoto drain valve, make sure you use 3/8" OD NOT ID on tubing. If installing, use washer supplied, tighten down, depending on valve type, hand tightening first suggested to get nipple pointed properly
3) 28mm used for Fuel Filter/27mm used for Oil Filter
4) whichever your Oil choice, make sure it states MS-12991
5) make sure you DO lubricate BOTH O rings in Oil & Fuel filters and replace with new everytime
6) lastly, remove oil filter last & replace. OIL should be drained almost completely no mess when removing.
Enjoy, very simple working on our 3.0L

Unscrew the oil filter first and make sure you remove it far enough to get the o-ring out of the groove. That way it drains while you are doing the rest of it.

Drain the oil second.

Do any other routine maintenance you need to do. I rotate tires with every oil change. I also lube my aftermarket control arms.

Once I'm done with that, the filter is mostly drained and much less of a mess.

thanks everyone...just took out the oil filter after letting it sit for about 30 min and everyone is right...it wasn't messy! Any trick to orienting this Fumoto in a certain position?

Technically doesn't need to be positioned perfectly. You can see mine
However, hand tightening 1st, will give you an idea how it "seats'
Here's mine

my 'stove' pipe ended up in the 3 o'clock position and I don't like it like that...would rather it be pointed up at 12 o'clock...any tips? It seems the body of the Fumoto spins in 2 pieces???

Unscrew & try to reposition??
Once completed your going to really enjoy changing your oil in future
Never needing to worry about tourque for the drain bolt again

Last time I changed my oil I was watching the pan fill up and asking myself, why is oil about to spill over? Yelp! I forgot to pull out the drain plug in the drain pan. Too hot to dip my hand in it, oil everywhere, dang it! Don't think I didn't feel like a bone head.

With a fumoto valve I could have reached up there and closed it. 🙂

I surprised at that, I wonder why it didn't drain properly. Mine has worked great, no issues at all. As long as I remove the drain plug. 😆

I've Fumoto drain valves on two of my vehicles, including my Jeep.

From experience, the valve's threads will mate to the pan's drain port threads as they do. The orientation of the valve turret will be whatever it is after the valve body is seated and carefully torqued with a Crescent wrench.

E.g., the turret on my Jeep is near the 6 o'clock position, whereas the same on my wife’s Honda is at my preferred 12 o'clock position. Proper functioning isn't affected. It's a great accessory that I recommend to others. Note that a skid plate is money well spent to protect the valve itself.

@Flip
I've the identical fluid drain pan, and it does indeed respond well to drain hole enlargement. 👍

thank you re: orientation...driving me nutz that it seats at the shittiest of positions I'd prefer 🤪
