Mine has a bigger hole and no cover ... :giggle:

that would of saved my bacon! However, I added even more drain holes in mine since I last posted...should be no problems going forward. So glad I now have a Fumoto and a drain tube...should make things a breeze in the future

I surprised at that, I wonder why it didn't drain properly. Mine has worked great, no issues at all. As long as I remove the drain plug. 😆
drill extra holes in it for good measure 👍

I recently bought a Fumoto (actually 3 for all on my driveway after an oil incident lol), waiting for some more miles before the oil change and get the Fomoto on.

Speaking of great engineering, the RAM folks put the oil filter exactly above the tie rod, so either you do the zip lock bag trick which gets slippery and messy or have the tie rod covered with oil.

I think the engineers who designed this little powerplant hate those of us who do maintenance on them. I'm installing a Fumoto valve this oil change to keep things easier / cleaner going forward. First time I changed the oil I had hot oil overwhelm the top basin of my 16 quart drain pan faster than it could drain into the primary holding tank...it filled up and flowed over onto my garage floor before it could all drain into the primary holding tank. So I drilled out the drain holes in the drain pan BIGGER hoping they will keep up with the volume of oil leaving the Jeep's crankcase once the oil pan's drain bolt is removed in the future. The new Fumoto with a drain hose down into the drain pan's primary holding area should be nice & tiddy. I'm still trying to figure out how to make removing the inverted oil filter a 'clean' affair? Any tips? The fuel filter isn't hard...just stinky and sort of messy. Anyways, does anybody else cuss these VM engineers when turning a wrench on these things? 🤪
Am I the only one here that thinks a fumoto valve on an off road vehicle is not only unnecessary, but a disaster waiting to happen?
Really, how hard is it to unscrew a drain plug?

This.

And..

Those little drain pans with the plug suck. Drain into a big open pan and then pour into a tote that you take to the recycler.

Get a ziploc bag when you pull old oil filter. Shove it down as far as it will go on the old oil filter, and use the bag to catch the residue.

1. Park over the nearest storm drain
2. Pull the drain plug. Wait patiently.
3. Use impact wrench to remove oil filter housing. Replace filter with the cheapest compatible filter from rockauto. Dispose of old filter in nearest bush.
4. Once the oil has finished draining, put the dfrain plug back on. Use impact wrench to tighten. Recommend 3 ugga-duggas.
5. Install oil housing back on engine. Use impact wrench. 2 ugga duggas. Warning: If you use 3 ugga duggas you will crack the housing.
6. Remove oil cap.
7. Pour oil into the engine. 5 quarts recommended. Do not use 4 quarts. Do not use 6 quarts. Use 7 quarts or more if you want a fun smoke show. I recommend adding seafoam to the intake for extra smoke. Stellantis recommends 0w20 oil meeting the MS6395 standard. Walmart/costco brand 0w20 is fine. AMSOIL is fine. Holy water is not recommended. Cooking oil is not recommended. Brake fluid is also not recommended. Glade Plug-In oil is slightly recommended because it'll smell amazing.
8. Replace oil cap.

I get it...I'm old and not 'looking' for offroad conquests anymore...I had my Yota Land Cruiser days and did my level best to destroy nice daily drivers. This is my wife's Jeep so it's merely a 'risk vs reward' thing. It sees light trails at the ranch and when we go exploring...and some incliment weather. I can almost always back up and go around another way if things get too dicey. But you're right, it does create another potential 'weak link'. IF it ever does fail, I've saved my drain plug! Cheers to no more sooty oil splashes!

a lot of variables would have to come into alignment for this Fumoto to fail...but, yes, it could. I suppose we could also get struck by lightning thru the open SOT roof! 🤪

Simple trick that helps with oil filter removal. If you have the oil filter on the underside of the engine, take a good size center punch and hammer and drive the punch into the center of the oil filter to drain the oil out from the filter before removal.

In 1965, when I was 16 yo, I got the bright idea to do this on my '65 Mustang. Poked a hole in the oil filter and then could not get the filter off.... then, went to take the filter off with big mouth pliers and the filter crushed..

I walked 2 miles to a mechanic at a small shop down the road. He drove me home and he managed with a lot of work and assorted tools to get the filter off..

I learned the hard way then, when young.... you do not want to be stupid and poke a hole in an oil filter and also you do not drain fluid out of anything unless you know you can get the fill plug off..

I can change the oil in my 5.3 GMC Sierra in about 10 minutes...GM's engineers didn't 'punk' us when it comes to maintenance. They still make everything simple & accessible for oil changes

that method is certainly a last resort...seen many done that way and seen many in piles of old filters at shops with holes in them...not happening here but to each their own!
