I had planned to do the foam this weekend, but now you guys got me think8g with the shrink wrap. I have some of that around. Also interested in where you got that bifold 4-way wrench.
Walmart sells the foldable 4-way...$15. I had to purchase one in an emergency situation... luckily it was a 24hr store.

Telescoping lug wrench works great. 15-20 bucks.

Don't want to high-jack the thread, but on similar subject matter...

What are your thoughts on security/locking lug nuts. I know they can be defeated... so are they really needed...

I hate having to carry the easily lost key and it is more difficult to remove than standard lug nuts..

I'm always afraid I will be able to remove all the standard lug nuts and the lastone... the security lug nut will be an issue...

Do the benefits outweigh the potential problems ?

I use locking lugs. Key stays in glove box. They may not be fool proof but a deterent is a deterent for most folks.

Yeah that's all good, I have one too but then I'm at the mercy of a battery, I'm certainly not going to carry one in all 4 of my vehicles. What a pita that would be. I'd feel like the dunkin donut guy " time to charge the battery " LOL ?
Agree. Plus there’s the possibility of the battery catching on fire. Happened to a neighbor friend of mine, and caught the rear seat of his pickup on fire. Luckily, he was able to put it out before it spread much further. He was camping way out in the boonies too. Would have been a very long walk back if his entire truck burnt to a crisp.

I have the factory set but I switched to black lug nuts, I haven't bought a new set yet but I was thinking about purchasing a set of gorilla -spline. I don't know how often thieves are stealing wheels these days, seems like they are after the whole vehicle, idk.

To add to what @Rhinebeck01 suggested, and what I do with all of my vehicles, is to make that socket a deep 6 (SIX) point. a 12 point socket will ruin the stainless skin on the factory lug nuts real quick.

If you can't break the lug nut due to the torque it was tightened at, it's okay to use your body weight by stepping (not jumping) on the lug wrench/breaker bar. Just make sure that you are doing so in the loosening orientation rather than making it tighter.

You can do the same when you put the wheel back on, just make sure to check it with a torque wrench when you get home. Everyone has a 1/2" drive torque wrench, right?

I need to make a correction; my 16" bi-folding 4 - way is stowed in the compartment behind the factory scissor jack, I apologize for the wrong information. The Walmart 2-ton hyper tough bottle jack does stow inside the same compartment as the scissor jack along with the jack handles, breaker bar & socket. Obviously I use terry cloth towels which I find work very well, there is no rattling. I also lash down the outer flap as a precautionary measure.

My thoughts exactly. Thats why I ask... for some of the unforseen issues that can happen, do we need them if wheel theft has fallen off in favor of stealing the whole vehicle ?

I have purchased black Gorilla spline lug nuts for my last few vehicles. They are great quality, I like them.
My main issue is, the "KEY" is basically like an adapter you attach to the tire iron, with the super high torque the Jeeps use, Im afraid I will strip it out or bot be able to het the leverage I need.
Maybe I'm over thinking it... lol

I 2nd what The Last Cowboy mentioned, checking to make sure you have the correct torque I think you'll be OK.

I've been on the fence about ordering new wheel locks, I would prefer not to have them but I don't want to get burned either.

I guess depending where u live .. do have ur vehicle where they steal a lot? that security nut will deter most cases of it getting stolen. Unless use got some rare rims , I can't think of someone taking their time and work to take the thing off.

I'm still confused how lugnut torque can be a range of 85 up to 125ft.lbs?....... That must be why the dealer stripped off two lugnuts a few years back, tried charging me for them too.

Same... I figure more security is better.
