I have 2021 Rubicon and I don't use ESS and don't want the small battery issues I read about.

Lots of options just determine your power needs.

The OEM "batteries" lasting only 3 years is crap but not unexpected with it setting for a week or so at a time. So many parasite drawing systems then add main battery and ESS battery fighting each other. I would have some added charging system battery tender or solar. I've got solar on my JT.
On AGM batteries I've been using them for over 21 years a few that I have are 20 years old or close to it and still working. My XJ had duel battery set up by myself and had sat for over 2 years a few different times and still started with them. I was a "fan boy" for Optima's but I've had 2 or 3 fail (red tops). With the AGM batteries I've ever welded quite a lot of things, a secondary reason I like to run duel batteries. As of now I've got 7 or so of them.

I have a 2018 JLUR that I ordered in April 2018 and received in May 2018. There is a tad over 32,000 miles on it so far. Lately, I'm noticing a message that states "LOW BATTERY; AUX SWITCHES NOT AVAILABLE" but then it goes away after starting within about 15 or 20 seconds and then the accessories connected to the switches work fine. I'm sure the issue is the main battery but my question is for anyone who has already changed out their OEM battery -- if you have replaced your OEM battery, how long was it before you had to change it out??? I would expect an OEM battery to last at least 3 years minimum and mine has just passed that point. I'm sure it would last longer if I put it on a trickle-charger but I haven't. My Jeep is not my daily driver and it generally sits in my garage until the weekend. The OEM battery on my F-150 lasted almost 6 years and went thru some hellish extreme conditions...Alaska winters and then Texas summers without any assistance or regular maintenance. Honestly, I was hoping it would last a bit longer but it is what it is. Lastly...does anyone have any recommendations for what battery to replace it with???
@W5MQS

You have a 2018 JLU. Like it or not, It is time to replace BOTH the Main and the Aux battery. A wise move since your JLU is a 2018 is to also get a dealer to apply TSB 18-092-19 completed (Power Control Update) if it has not been applied already..

I might add, if you do not replace both the batteries and do so soon, you will in short order probably be posting you have a no start situation and your JLU left you stranded, etc... this especially, if you have not had the TSB mentioned applied.

After you get the 2 batteries replaced (with OEM or aftermarket batteries) expect to be doing this same battery change out dance in say 3 years.... or sooner if you do not oversee/maintain whatever batteries are in your JLU.

Since your JLU sits unused in your garage for days at a time the prudent thing to do is to keep the JLU on a battery maintainer/tender while it is sitting there unused.. Doing this would be a wise move whether you have OEM batteries or aftermarket, high end batteries.

@NewJLU2019 if you are going to spend that much there are much better offerings than Deltran like NOCO and don‘t discount the NOCO 10 because if you have a stock setup with ESS the batteries are basically connected together as one during charging so it would be combined amp hour rating but if you plan on maintaining them separately then the NOCO 5 would be better suited due to the low amp hour rating of the smaller ESS battery.

I am quite sure there are guys here that are so much smarter on the factory ESS mismatched battery setup than me but I have talked with and exchanged countless emails with lots of battery charger and battery makers on proper upkeep and as we all know the mismatched dual ESS/crank battery setup that FCA put in is poor at best on several levels, it’s just a overly engineered design.

My fix was to remove the ESS battery along with the main crank battery and tray and go a different route and also get the recommended charger based on the charging curve of what my choice of batteries were.

I just went through this myself. Started getting miscellaneous warning lights, sporadic error codes that appeared and disappeared. Things started getting progressively worse: Jeep refused to start on first try, speakers were popping loudly.

My Sahara is a 2018 with 6,500 miles, purchased it new 1.5 years ago, but the batteries clearly were 3+ years old from time of manufacture.

Two weekends ago drove to O’reilly Auto Parts; their parts counter was most helpful. Got replacements for both batteries; both were in stock. O’reillys only carries their own brand, Super Last, made by Johnson Controls. So I was fine with that. The main battery was $199; the auxiliary battery was $107.

Replacing the auxiliary battery took some doing, but the Jeep runs perfectly now.

I was looking at this one next. You suggested that in reply.

I do not have issues since its only jeep is few months old but I don't drive it everyday anymore since retired so don't want to mess batteries up.

Any one have suggestion about the current 2021 Rubicon Battery set up they have for this one below ?

NOCO GENIUS10, 10-Amp Fully-Automatic Smart Charger, 6V and 12V Battery Charger, Battery Maintainer, Trickle Charger, and Battery Desulfator with Temperature Compensation

Will it charge both batteries since they are connected ?
@NewJLU2019

Yes, it charges both. Hook the tender/maintainer to Main battery terminals and both Main and Aux batteries are maintained. The Noco 5 handles this job easily. You can safely leave the tender/maintainer. connected 24/7 7 days a week if you are not using the vehicle.

Amazon has the Noco 5 at a very decent price.

Thanks.

I was taking Jeep for some country driving today but complex of storms dropped down from Kansas through Oklahoma right into DFW and rained early then break and just rained again and light showers now.

Been really wet spring here. June picked right up where May left off. :rain::swear::swear::swear::swear:

The West is drying up and we are soaked. Mother Nature is something.

Yes it will charge both if they are connected, if you want to charge the ESS battery separately then remove the ESS negative off the main negative crank battery then attach the positive off the charger to the positive main as the ESS positive is attached there then put the other clamp on the ESS negative that you disconnected, I have done it both ways when I ran the stock setup and the end results were the same.

As far as the NOCO 5 or 10 the 10 currently on Amazon is $30 more than the 5 so to me it’s worth the small increase, they both offer the same as far as being a 12v supply, repair mode, AGM and regular lead acid batteries the biggest advantage is the 10 amp will be a faster charge and will offer slightly better performance in regard to sulfate buildup removal being it throws a high amp rating to clear any buildup off the battery plating but if you plan on charging separately then go with the 5 as the 10 will be a bit much of a charge on that ESS lawnmower battery.
