Let me preface by saying that I don't care that the ESS isn't working, and have done zero troubleshooting with no intention of really digging into it, but am curious to see if anyone might have experienced the same "issue".

About 7 or 8 months ago I noticed that the ESS on my 18 JLUR wasn't working. The only dash warning is the "ESS not ready. Battery charging" in the message center. No other warning lights are lit up. Charging system is consistently in the 13.8 to 14.5 range. No other issues with electrical system, no starting/cranking issues. Both batteries are about 2 years old. Maybe 3. I forget exactly.

The general consensus seems to be that my aux battery is toast and should have killed my main battery and left me (or even worse - my wife) stranded somewhere by now, but it has not. I'd also expect that I'd have a warning light or two in addition to the message center notification.

So I guess what I'm getting at is, is it common for ESS to quit with no dash lights illuminated, no other electrical issues and still be up and running months later?

Yeah that's pretty normal when the aux goes. Count yourself lucky that it hasn't taken out the main yet, though. Would either replace it or bypass it at this point (probably good to do both since you've been running a while with a crapped out aux).

"Yes". And if you live in a warm climate like your profile suggests, your batteries are clocking out on an expected schedule.

'21 JLUR E-Torque that reads the same msg and has for a few weeks now. I noticed Jeep wasn't ever turning off during my normal commute, which it does so unless AC is at full blast. I'm going to schedule a service appointment since it's still under the 3/36. Since I only have the one 12v battery I'm not sure if it's the 12v or the E-Torque 48v system. I have been watching my Volts and they run from 12.5-13.5. Hopefully it's the 12v and Jeep replaces it under the 3/36. I also get the aux switches not ready msg. But that goes away once I start driving. If I had the aux battery ess I would say the 12v system but since I have the E-Torque I'm not sure.

The EVIC should tell you why ESS isn't available

My ESS didn't work after the first year on my jeep. i did not change either battery for 4.5 years. Once i finally did the Genesis dual battery upgrade, but my jeep never had issues starting or even sluggish to start. dont fix what isnt broken right?

It does. It says battery charging, ac or heat not to temp, driver seatbelt not engaged, all the normal messages. But the auto-stop hasn't engaged in a few weeks. Despite driving the same it's always been driven for 3 yrs. No other additional warning, messages or dash lights. Other than the normal ones stated above when those conditions are present. In the 3yrs I've had Jeep it has always engaged unless I turn off the system via dash button. Which if I push button it does say the system is off. That's why I think either the 12v battery or 48v battery isn't charging completely allowing the auto-stop system to never engage properly. Hopefully it's just the 12v battery not completely charging and not an actual BSG or 48v issue. Which seem to be rare if at all.

When I had a 2018, once a year a new air filter, a new air freshener, and a new aux battery were part of my standard shopping list.

From experience you are on borrowed time. I had the same thing happen just saying ESS not ready and the icon lit up. Didn't think anything of it because I always just hit the disable button so I just let it go. I think it was about 2-3 weeks later I am driving down the road and my Jeep shuts off at a stop sign. Luckily I always have a boost pack so I get it started. I had to keep the RPM's above like 1200 for the Jeep to keep running. If I let them down at a stop light or sign it would die. Made it to an AutoZone and changed the battery in the parking lot. Left the aux disconnected and that weekend removed the aux all together and taped off the ends in the box. Been running with just my H7 and F42 disconnected for a couple years now.

mine works intermittently and never flashes a warning light. This started about 2 months in to ownership in 2022

I would strongly recommend replacing the AUX battery
Possibly replacing BOTH batteries soon
My 2022 JLURD did exactly same thing. Brought to dealer, load tested and MAIN battery defective/replaced. Aux drained the Main battery
Best wishes 👍

These posts make me so glad I ditched the lawnmower battery, set my Tazer to kill and got start/stop out of my life 😁
My lady, in her lovely accent... sometimes slips up & calls it a "lawmoaner."
