A mistake was made and the dealership is owning it. If there aren't any engines available there isn't much they can do. Not sure what else it is you are wanting form the dealer?

While this is a very good idea, I don't think the dealership can do this. I'm fairly certain that the dealership has to replace the engine as a warranty repair. The repair/replacement must go through the normal warranty channels. The dealership will not front money to purchase a new engine from a third party.
Yep. It's been a LONG time since I worked at a dealership, warranty parts had to come from GM.
There could be a GM crate engine at the auto parts place across the street, but it wouldn't matter.

Thanks for all the replies. Thanks Ted, I had forgotten the name of the used blocks, I'll pass it along. Sounds as if they are getting all they can expect. I alway tried to give my customers more than they expected but I guess the days of going above and beyond are past. Thanks again.

I'm curious to know that they did, but here's the deal on dealer damaged items. They have to make you whole. That's it, if that means replacing a single part they broke, that's it. If they are going to buy a short block, that means you have a zero mileage bottom end to go with the top end of whatever the vehicle mileage is.

That's an improvement over the original position, which was a complete engine with "X" mileage on it. Technically, they only have to provide you with a "like" replacement, which means they can install a used short block or used engine of "like" mileage and model year. Since it's still in the warranty period, using a new short block eliminates any issues within the warranty period between you and the OEM, hopefully eliminates any issue with an unknown "used but like mileage" short block, etc.

They have no obligation to do a complete motor, if they cracked a block, technically they can replace just the block and transfer components.

The fact that they are replacing a short block, giving your friend a loaner, trying to expedite the parts ordering and apologizing, is a GOOD outcome.

Yeah, it's hard to wait for something, but I deal with the parts supply issue every day at the dealership I'm at. We have things we can do to try to improve wait times, but sometimes it's just a matter of there not being a part in the chain. This is particularly true of vehicles over 10 years old.

Sounds like a best case scenario …. If block is cracked then a short block is all that’s needed, why replace the entire top end if nothing is wrong with it?
Let the process continue and your friends should feel lucky they are being well taken care of!

Hope it doesn't take forever to get the new engine.
The engine in my sister in law's Kia Sorento blew a year ago under warranty and she's still waiting for a replacement along with many other people. The dealership did NOT give her a loaner either.

As to your question, why are these engines hard to come by: With already over 10 million of them being sold, so that says that the 3.6 is Chrysler Jeeps go to engine. IMO..There sales are still going good, not because of our horrible economy, or high interest rates, but rather many are buying new now, because they don't want to be pushed into electrics only.

I find it ironic that all these aftermarket shops that replace motors with LS1 and Hemi have all kinds of brand new 3.6L laying in their back lot and Mopar can't touch them. All the while Mopar has a national shortage of motors.

Do you want a used engine installed by the dealer in your Jeep?

Can't tell you..shhh
Am I unreasonable in those expectations. Thanks
Not to be a dick, but since this is happening to your friend and not you, you don't have a dog in the fight to have an "expectation" of the dealer. You said your friend is happy with the way things were working out so that should be the end of it. They aren't getting blatantly screwed by the dealer and the dealer is working it as best they can from the sounds of it.

What do you think the replacement block will be? Warranty work requires like for like parts to complete the repair. There is nothing that states the replacement part/s must be new. Unless there is no other availability, warranty replacement parts are typically refurbished. Most people don't realize they aren't always receiving new parts on warranty work.

Refurbished/rebuilt is not the same as used. And I seriously doubt dealerships are installing used parts under warranty.

They aren't installing used parts under warranty, but they can install used if they damage something and have to cough up themselves. As long as it's a "like" replacement. 20,000 mile short block for a 2020, to replace a 20,000 mile short block in a 2020.

Most won't though, they'll put a reman short block in to eliminate possible hassles later. We wouldn't put anything used in unless a customer requested it to get them on the road.

This doesn't sound like a warranty issue, it sounds like they damaged something.

I can say, that there is a possibility of a used part being installed for a warranty issue, but it will be something the factory removed from a demo fleet car, tech rep fleet car, or something out of the training system (very low mileage cars in the training centers). This is unusual, but it happens for parts that are literally half a world away and 30+ days from coming out of a production facility. They'll rob the parts off of something to get a customer on the road. I've personally seen this happen more than once, but it's not very common.

Of course it is. How many new parts do you think are in a remanufactured engine? Only as many as it takes to bring it back into spec. A <1000 mile used engine takeoff from Rubitrux or other conversion shops are a great deal , easier to install, and reliable.
