The charge for the labor seems very reasonable, the $120 for the boot seems high, but overall, it's fair, IMO.

Thank you sir! So I should ignore Pep Boys' warning that this job requires some battery shutdown procesure and go to dealer only?

Also, if you take your own part to these 4x4 shops then they jack up their labor. So I guess they got me by the thingies.

The shop says that Mopar does not sell just the boot, and he is having trouble finding an aftermarket boot kit

Mopar Axle assembly costs $820 and it is on back order nation wide with no ETA. If I can't find the boot kit then Jeep will stay parked for a long time. Seattle buses here I come

If it were mine I wouldn't park it. It will take a few months to wear out so you might as well drive it until you find a new axle shaft.

Fill it with grease every so often and drive it. The grease comes out and contaminants get in and wear the joint down but that takes a long time. I've ran them for months exactly like yours is back when I was too broke to replace it.

Of course this is just my opinion....

I don't know about the grease. I assume any will do but I like marine so it fights water a little. Instead of duct tape use rescue self vulcanizing tape. I like the "Bond It" brand myself. Just search on Amazon rescue tape and a ton will come up. It's silicone tape that if it's clean will vulcanize to itself and create a good barrier. I've used it on radiator hoses before so it's good stuff.

Use gorilla tape the kind tha's waterproof. Like flex a seal. Used that to temporarily fix a leak on a window in my house and its been there for 6 years lol.

From my experience replacing the boot can be a big PITA. Removing and replacing the shaft is straight forward and pretty easy, especially on a newer vehicle with no rust. The difference between replacing the boot or replacing the entire shaft..........replacing the boot adds a good bit of labor time and cost(it usually takes longer to replace the boot then removing and installing the shaft), versus replacing the entire shaft there is a lot less labor time but you pay more for the part. Of course it depends on whether you can find a boot kit or even a replacement axle.
As mentioned if you keep driving it as is you will probably need to replace the entire shaft/joint. You also need to be careful because if the joint seizes up it can damage other components and possible cause an accident. Not trying to scare you or anything, but it is a possibility if you drive on it long enough.

The grease looks like Green Grease. If it is, it’s synthetic, stable to 500° iirc, and waterproof. Great stuff. I’ve been using it exclusively for about 30 years, including when I had RCV’s (they approved it) in my last JL. Here’s a screen shot of what it looks like and you can get it at Autozone.
