One shop says that the labor is so high to replace the boot that it's better to just replace the axle.
Just the boot. That axle is fine. Call that instructor and ask him if he can instruct you and offer to pay for the instruction/help. This is a medium skill level job and you'll learn a lot. If you drive down to southern California, I'll help you do it in my driveway.

Good idea, will call the instructor and see what he says. Thank you. Imagine if I fix this myself, then I will replace boots like oil change 🤩👍

Can my boot make it to SoCal?
It'll be fine. You might wipe off all the grease on the boot and see how big the hole is and use something to degrease the boot a bit and try taping it up with electrical tape or a few wraps of duct tape to contain the mess.

Guys, things in America are crazy. In Afghanistan parts are very expensive, but labor is crap. Here labor costs as much or more than the parts. You think America can survive like this and for how long?

Duct Tape and Bailing Wire. Two things you should always have when going off road. Oh, maybe a small portable welder too.

I agree, several wraps with Duct Tape. Degrease the boot first, well. I would go further and zip tie the areas you Duct Tape.

I'm not sure about other places but the average here in the LA area is now $200/hour for labor. When I got an estimate to replace my engine it was 5k for the engine and 8k for the labor. So yes, labor is always going to cost more than the parts unfortunately.
