It is from the CV Boot. If you high pressure wash it it will remove the rest of the grease and make things worse. You'll need to at least replace the boot and possibly the joint.
Is this normal and will keep happening again and again?

They usually last the Life of the axle but sometimes they get ripped on a stick, etc. I've had them last for years. They make boots that have a seam n them to replace it without removing the axle. I highly don't recommend doing that. They seem to only last a few months. I wouldn't worry about it happening often. Just get you mechanic to repair it properly and it should last for years.

I'm not sure. Back when I worked at Sears Auto Center 20 years ago we would charge around $300 installed. I bet it's double that by now. Someone else hopefully will chime in that has had it done recently.

Guys, so what did this to me, a stupid Seattle pothole or some sharp tree branch on the trail?

Guys, what's this?
Take a close look at the damaged area on the boot. If it's a cut or tear, then it's likely trail damage. If it is a straight split along a rib it may be a defective boot and may be covered by warranty. I've had both scenarios on past vehicles.
