Guys, I forgot to ask them what they will replace, just the boot or the whole axle? I am thinking they will replace the whole axle because I don't think Jeep guidelines/procedures allow only boot replacement. Plus Mopar doesn't sell boot kits.
I don't want to contact them too much because I don't want them to change their mind 🫣

I don't understand why the other dealer told me that the part is on backorder. And my dealer has the part. Does it mean that some dealerships order and store parts for their use?
Dealership parts department typically keep a certain number of parts in stock. How much and what item can vary. From my experience getting parts from dealerships they have what I need in stock about 75% of the time. They often keep anything in stock that is a halfway common replacement need. I've also found that on some items a dealership price is very comparable to the big box stores, and often prefer OEM parts (especially electrical equipment) versus the knock off junk other places sell.
It's quite possible that the axleshafts are on backorder, meaning that you can't currently order one from the factory but the other dealership likely had ordered and received the part previously....prior to it going on back order.

Another thing to know about dealership parts departments is that they also may have stuff they say they don't have and it's up to their discretion if they want to sell it to you OR hold onto it for their own service department. When I was looking around for driveshaft bolts one dealer told me they had none and I'd have to come in person to place an order. So I show up the next day and got a different guy than I got on the phone and this guy sold me the ones they had in stock in the back.

Dealerships also have different prices on the same parts. One dealer wanted $3 per bolt, another dealer I called wanted $8/bolt.

Last year when I needed a slave cylinder to get my Jeep back from Texas to California they were on backorder as well. Called around and found one dealership an hour away that had one in stock. I was lucky it was the only dealer in the entire state of Texas that had held onto one just in case.

Seems that the level of service or lack of service depends on if you bought your vehicle from that dealer. The first dealer you spoke with did not look deep enough in the system to see who has a part nearby plus if you did not buy from them then they are not gonna dig real deep anyways.

Once, when my wife's JLURD was in for warranty work, the dealer gave me a newer 4runner they just took in on trade. It hadn't been cleaned up or anything. Found a baggie of old weed in one of the cubbie holes.
