'21 Sahara Altitude running Rubicon take-offs. Rotating my tires yesterday, and nearly every single lug nut would get stuck in the socket.

Using a 22mm impact socket with my impact driver. I've removed wheels with this same tool/socket before when I did my spacers, and I don't remember having this issue.

Is it a "thing" for lug nuts to swell (or sockets to shrink)?

I'm a bit ashamed to put in writing how I got them out each time.

More likely you're deforming the stock lug nut with the impact socket. If you have a clean one try the standard size socket and see if it fits better.

Then throw your lug nuts away and buy Gorilla!?

Mine kind of get stuck too. I’ve developed the habit of just as they are almost all the way off to start pulling back a bit more on the impact/socket while it’s on its last threads so that the sockets not fully seated on the nut. That way the nut falls out of the socket on its own when done.

It's pretty common with these stainless steel covers on factory lugnuts. It only take one or two times being hammered by an impact gun.

My son's truck had the same issue after he had a local tire place rotate his tires a few times. I have 18 years of commercial and paaenger vehicle repair experience and I had never seen such distorted lug nuts before. All caused by hammering from impact guns.

Some tire shops have about 150 psi in their compressed air systems. That's enough pressure to really damage things. Anyway, we had to replace all of his lug nuts after those idiots ruined them.

Noone but me has ever touched mine, and the sockets still fit perfectly. I've used my impact gun with 135 psi every time to loosen and partially tighten them, but I know how to use an impact gun on lug nuts properly.

… although impact guns are overkill under most circumstances.

I never use an impact gun on my lug nuts for this very reason.

Interesting. Since I did them for my spacers, I've had the tires rotated by two different dealership shops, so there's a possibility this is why it's different now vs previous with the same lugs and same tools.

My impact driver is just a battery-powered Ryobi, so likely isn't putting near as much pressure on them. I also manually thread them to finger tight and then just hit them with the impact to tighten.

This!

Also, using a 6 point socket is preferred over a 12 point version.

I have Gorilla's and always use a breaker bar so I don't ding them up. Very easy and no "hammering" on the nuts. I've never liked impacts on my lug nuts.

22.5mm sockets exist just for swollen Mopar lugs.
