Jacking up Jeep

Way better to ask too many questions on a topic like this. This forum is full of a lot of helpful people and only a few jerks, so don’t worry about asking questions. Dealing with what you want to do is potentially very dangerous if you don’t do it right. Good luck. I’m sure it will turn out great.

FYI - craftsman has a nice 1.5-ton compact floor jack that comes in a plastic carry case, works really well, portable, and definitely safer than relying on the emergency jack IMO

That's great news....I wasn't sure how many ton I would need, my door says 5800# so I assumed I need a 3 ton, but they are so big and don't have room to store. Does the 1.5 ton go high enough for the Jeep? I'm assuming your answer is yes, since you have one. When I'm shopping, how high do I need to make sure it will go?
PS: I did find a local shop that will rent me a floor jack and both stands for $40/day....that wasn't too bad. But after too many mod's I could have bought my own.

You can purchase any cheap floor jack from harbor freight. You can go with a 1.5 ton, 2 or 3 ton. With the 1.5 ton you should be find because you are only lifting one side at a time, not the whole Jeep FYI.

I personally like to work on my Jeep. When not at home I like to make sure I have the proper tools on the trail or if I get a simple flat. Especially since I have a 3.5" lift and 38" tires. I use a Pro Eagle 3Ton off-road Big Wheel Monster Jack. This is not something a lot of users will use or purchase since its expensive. It sure is way better then using a HI Lift jack out on the trail or incase of an emergency when your jeep is modified. Buy once cry once.

I had a flat last Sunday while food shopping. I changed the tire right in the supermarket parking lot. I have to say that scissor jack lifted the Jeep like it was nothing.

The OP is going to need a floor jack eventually. He's already "modifying" it. Albeit with a spray can. Anyone that owns a crescent wrench and pair of pliers needs a floor jack.

i have a 3 ton craftsman floor jack and 3 ton craftsman jack stand. i rather have a heavier capacity jack just to be on the safe side of thing. yeah, it might be an overkill, but jacks and jack stands are one of many things you dont want to skim on.

not bashing on your response, but going cheap on jacks and stands should not be one to skim on. harbor freight is a good name and have gottn stuff from them. however, i rather pick up a known name brand products like craftsman, snap on when i comes to jacks and stands. yeah 1.5 ton will cover the weight of the jeep, but again a 3 ton is much safer and known the jack or stand will hold the jeep with no real "stress". i picked up a craftsman 3 ton combo set for $150. they was running a 1/2 off price sale. org. price was $300.

good to know that the factory jack will lift the jeep. i used a factory jack on my 07 jeep grand cherokee and found out the freakn jack did not lift he jeep off the ground. luckly, i was only a mile from the house and got my floor jack to change my tires.

I have 3 floor jacks. One aluminum "racing" jack that lives in the truck, wrapped in a blanket and 2 steel floor jacks. It all started with one steel jack and then I wanted/needed one to keep in the truck, so I got an aluminum jack for that. Then I bought a 14 SS Camaro that was too low for any of the jacks I had, so I bought a low profile floor jack. The Camaro sold last summer and now I'm thick with floor jacks. But it's nice to grab 2 floor jacks and do some things like lift diagonal corners and swap tires.

since we're talking about jacks - a few weeks ago while trying to pull another Jeep out of a puddle, I got dirt and rocks jammed between the tire bead and rim. I started losing air quickly and decided to drive out to a hard surface area to change it... good thing I did too because the little tiny base on the emergency jack would have sunk right into the sand. no way that will work on a sandy trail. I picked up one of these after so I'll be better prepared next time:

I am very partial to the Bottle jack, I have two of them and a couple blocks of wood.

A bottle jack is hydraulic and overkill for a Jeep. You can lift most trucks with them. An 8 year old can lift the Jeep with the scissor jack. Just never go below the Jeep with any jack and no stands.

Craftsman is not all that either. Kinda low end as well. I mentioned harbor freight since OP Seems to not have any tools.

I use PRO Eagle off road jack. I’m sure you don’t know what that is since I posted a link on my original comment. I don’t own any harbor freight.

why so many floor jacks for the garage. Kinda pointless. What do you use on the trail
