I hear you. The Bronco mirror does stick out a bit further than a Wrangler, but I would image it folds in if needed on the trail. When I tried going doorless, I fought with three separate styles of mirrors and they were all crap. I ended up just putting the doors back out of frustration. But since our wish lists are not being solicited, you don't have to worry about future models not having door mounted mirrors.
When I have my doors off I only put my removable mirrors on for compliance, because, yes, they are crap. That said, I don't need them since with the doors off it's pretty easy and obvious to notice cars next to me when I attempt to change lanes.

As a biker, I'm used to turning my head to ensure I know what is going on around me but I did not like not having useful mirrors in a vehicle. A bit of a contradiction, I admit.

  • J70 wish list
    • Mount exterior mirrors to the body, not the doors. Like the Bronco.
    • You can already order the Mopar relocation kit from the dealership. It should stay that way, as an option, for those who want to go mirrorless on the trail
    • Move widow switched to the doors. You already have power going to the doors for the mirrors
    • Leaving the switches in the center console reduces complexity for individual door wiring, meaning door removal is less involved and the overall cost of the jeep is a little cheaper. Also, in your scenario of moving the mirror to the body, you'd no longer have mirror wiring going to the door
    • Cooled front seats or ventilated.
    • Rather not have another thing that adds cost to the jeep while adding little value. Take your doors off
    • Knee padding on the drivers side tunnel.
    • Maybe. In the wheeling ive done i haven't hit my knees yet
    • Surround cameras. Maybe an under camera or two
    • Maybe. A spotter is still better. I could see the value if you're wheeling solo but im not sure that value outweighs the added cost and complexity to the purchase and maintenance of the jeep
    • 5,000 lbs towing with 35’s
    • Get a Gladiator
    • Factory retractable rock slide steps.
    • Hard no. Rock sliders are made to take a beating. Retractable steps cant.
At some point, you should question if what you want is really a jeep. The whole point of the jeep is minimalist, rugged, and easy to work on. What you're describing is the opposite. I think you might actually be in the market for a Toyota 4Runner. A great vehicle that will do the off-roading you likely do with all the comforts you want.

How about a bronco style hard top?

Jeep has had years to adapt and compete with the much better Bronco top.

front panels and rear panels come off unlike the Wrangler.

Magneto 3.0 concept vehicle in a production trim. Solid axles. 900+ ftlbs of torque at 0 rpms. 300 miles of range. Retains a real transfer case with low range. Similar price as the current JL rubicon. Nothing else needed. Being that we own a JL and a JT moving the window switches would confuse the hell out of me. I still reach for the center cluster in the company car.

Jeep has made the Wrangler too bougie. Fine with the Grand Wagoneer, et all other models. The Wrangler should be a low tech basic rugged vehicle. Too many variations/trim lines as well. Build it to tackle the trails right out of the box without parts breaking. It wasn't meant to be a kid hauler, a suburban traversing mall crawler. Toughen it up again and keep it that way. You don't need a touch screen infotainment system, heated steering wheel and the like. Endless amounts of urban 4WD/AWD hoopties for that. Bring back a CJ or even TJ style and call it good. Those who don't want it can go suck their thumb while driving a cush box.

Make half doors/soft uppers standard, as was done during the YJ era. Otherwise, offer them as a no-cost customer selection at the time of purchase. Don't price them stratospherically as a naked cash grab, as was done during the JL era.

Maintain a 3 pedal offering, incorporating the new GMET4 Evo engine, but FFS, get the clutch design and the gear ratios right this time. Ditch the clutch pedal assist spring, too.

Don't enlarge any of the vehicle's exterior dimensions, but trim as many millimeters from the width of the interior transmission tunnel as may be possible.

The HVAC shouldn't have any integration with the touchscreen head unit, full stop. The former should function and be controlled independently with knobs and buttons.

Analog-style gauges for engine parameters (oil pressure & temp, coolant temp, etc.). Otherwise, make all such data viewable on the head unit at one time. Don't require the driver to scroll between each reading, as they must currently do on some trims.

A. The JL is more capable out of the box than any of its predecessors. B. If they build an off road only tractor like CJ that's barely streetable they will lose 90%+ of their sales, not a good business model. C. Heated seats and infotainment don't detract from the capability or reliability off road, but they sure make the 1k mile drive to Moab to run trails like Pritchett Canyon much more enjoyable. If you're Jeep has to appear tough and rugged at the mall and local trails (as it would be too uncomfortable to road trip) for you to feel it, is probably too late. And you can always buy a radioless, uncomfortable YJ or CJ for far less than any new Jeep.

I wonder how many that clamor for the good old days have been there and done that ? I drove my 63 as a DD for over 10 years….. with every major and most minor parts swapped or at least upgraded. From the drivetrain and mechanical parts to the frame, power steering, seats, added stereo on and on to make it both off and On road capable…. I have nostalgic memories, but also remember the horrible leaf spring lift ride, box heater that might keep the passenger’s feet warm and worthless defroster, zero amenities or comforts. …. It would make a fun toy today, but the reality is this old man couldn’t stand it as a DD.

We've been wheeling for 3 decades, and yet our 1st moab trip wasn't until 2020. Why? Because none of the other ~20 Jeeps we've owned were both streetable enough for a 1k mile drive at freeway speed while still being capable enough to run 7+ rated trails. The wife's WJ was a great road trip vehicle stock... with 0 ground clearance or off road prowess. Build it enough to confidently run the Rubicon... and it's not so streetable anymore. A built TJ for 1k miles trying to get the 4.0L to push it anywhere near the 80mph speed limit in UT? No thanks. Meanwhile the JLUR will gladly cruise 90mph for back to back days running clear across the country and then climb gut buster (when it was dug out and labeled impassable by the 2dr guys). The best Jeeps to ever come from the factory are being built as we speak both on and off road and it's not even close.

The vast majority of them never leave pavement. If they ignore the majority of their customer base (non-hardcore) then they won't be able to justify keeping it around for the more hardcore of us. The mall crawlers pay the bills.

Yep, but most who have one like knowing they could if they wanted to, and that carries a certain amount of gravitas.

Just like a guy with a sports car knows he could go fast if he wanted. Although most owners don't, or simply can't, drive it the way a sport car designed to be driven. That car projects an image.

These reasons are why we have impractical vehicles designed to do things that most people will never subject them to. No one needs, them, they want them. Ask any woman if she would rather be wanted, or simply needed. Oh, and she can't answer both, one or the other.
