Im wondering how this is a paradigm breaker when the Chevy Volt did that years ago and was the perfect middle step from hybrid to full electric before they axed it.

I think this falls into the same category as what Apple does. They come in to the game late with a lot of tech, and assume that their customers will not have paid attention to areas of the market where these things already existed.

And yeah, paradigm breaker is a bit strong.

Neat marginally-related fact: a number of Cruise ships are also paradigm breakers- they charge batteries that drive electric propulsion systems.

The Volt's engine could still directly drive the wheels. We haven't had a true electromotive drivetrain available in a production vehicle thus far, as far as I know.

I wonder now with the tacit admittance by the national media that an all-EV country is much farther off than they pretended it was, if perhaps we'll start to see the proliferation of electromotive drivetrains. That was the sane stepping stone to EVs...unfortunately the idea didn't generate enough fear and anger to be used in politics so once again billions of our money gets blown on failed "progress".

Its kind of how Honda is doing their hybrids. The Accord, CRV and Civic soon. It only brings in the ice to directly help move the vehicle at highway speeds.

Just going by the description the REPB will function differently than the Chevy Volt did. I believe the term for the Volt was "Parallel Hybrid" where the ICE helped to charge the battery but under certain conditions was the primary power source for the drive wheels. The REPB however would be a "Series Hybrid" where the only function of the ICE would be to charge the batteries and would not have a direct connection to the drive wheels. I'm personally surprised no one has tried this setup before now. This sounds like it would be a near-perfect application for a small displacement, high torque diesel generator.

Bmw would like a word, they had it in the i3 range extender version. Bev with small motor powering a generator to maintain battery charge.
