This is probably common knowledge by now, but I just figured it out yesterday and found it to be very cool. When on the street and using Off-Road +, the entire transmission calibration changes to keep the engine well into the powerband. Also, the annoying 4 cylinder mode is deactivated - no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to go into that stupid mode.

There also seems to be a slight change to the fuel and timing maps. The Jeep seems much more responsive, and on deceleration, the exhaust pops like a race car. Very cool! I'm going to leave it in this mode all the time now.

Gas mileage went to crap, but the Jeep just "feels better" to drive. Also, I'm feeling all the benefits of the paddle shifters without any of the negatives.

You can go into 4cyl in Offroad +. I find Offroad + perfect for my daily city driving. Definitely more responsive. The snap, crackles, and pops are so worth it.

Only time I don't use it is on highway (except mountain passes).

Another bonus to having the rock-trak full time I suppose. I have not tried it on my diesel will check it out.

I tried really hard to get the engine to go into 4 cyl mode, but it just wouldn't. When I turned Offroad+ off, it almost immediately went into 4 cyl mode.

It is very cool to use - I want to figure out what it does to the engine tune. There's definitely a difference. If I ever get down to the 4 wheel dyno shop that I used to tune my supercharged WJ, I'll do dyno pulls with it off, and with it on. Something tells me that when it's turned on, the tune may be closer to what's in the Challengers. That may be where the missing 15 HP hides.

I have a 3.6 and the + button makes a huge difference while driving on the beach. Keeps the RPM's up much longer and prevents from shifting up and down so much. Prevents the jeep from bogging down in the deep sand. It also takes the traction control off. I run it every time.

If you have XR off-road plus never goes into 4 cylinder mode.
That's good to know!! I wonder what they did to make it more of a "sport mode" than on the non-XR 392s.

Mine will not go into 4 cyl, lame mode, when in offroad plus. It is a XR.

I've got to admit that when gas was $7 a gallon here in CA, the 4cyl mode wasn't so horrible. But, I'd rather use it when I want it - not when the car nannys say I have to use it.

Just got our new 2023 392, so forgive my ignorance on this question. But what's your process for putting the Jeep into Off-Road+ mode?

Curious what this option is supposed to be used for, and if having it on can cause any damage to the engine, etc.?

I am currently still only at 340 miles on the engine, so assume waiting to put this on until 1500 miles is probably expected?

Thanks for any help.

I've heard alot of people who leave it in off-road+ all the time when driving on the street, but I could never get past the "rev hanging" that it hesitates just too long before shifting and hangs there at high RPM.

I will be nice, but I think you will probably get some negative replies if you continue to refer to our Jeeps as "cars". lol

Welcome to the 392, it's fun!

haha thanks for the feedback. I have updated it to "Jeep." I don't want to piss off the natives :)

While you're still breaking in the engine, I've heard that it is a good idea to keep the engine from going into 4cyl mode. The reason is that the rings won't all seat evenly. When I was breaking mine in, I used the paddle shifters because that deactivates the 4cyl mode. Once you get to the 300-400 mile range of the break-in routine, keeping it in offroad+ might be good - it holds RPMs higher during shifts and according to the break-in rules, the engine should be gently "exercised" at higher RPMs to finish up the break-in procedure.

Then, when you hit 500 miles - get the oil changed, and get an oil sample to send to Blackstone... You'll want a baseline oil sample so that you can compare as the car ages. Sounds silly, but with these engines, you want to watch over them carefully and have a baseline to compare to if a bearing gives up.

There is a button on lower dash that says offroad plus. Press it.

It turns off traction control and changes the engine mapping so that it holds gears longer (higher RPM). It also wakes up the exhaust even more creating more snap, crackles, and pops on deceleration. You can turn traction control back on in offroad + though.

It is basically like a sport mode.

I wouldn't mess with it until you've broken engine in though since it encourages harder acceleration.
