I’m taking the 392 on it’s first fairly technical off-road trip and I’m concerned about pinching my exhaust tips. Has anyone removed the tip before going off-road?

Is that the metalcloak 392 skid plate? Do you like it? Any body modification needed?

Maybe try a hitch slider. Pops in your receiver and should slightly extend your departure angle. Also saves your receiver from taking the direct hit and getting that all caked with dirt/mud.

Otherwise it just adds character, and if you're that worried about it, just take a pair of pliers and bend it back out if you do get some damage.

Both options seem like a lot less work than removing your tips.

I would disagree it adds character. It’s also going to take more than pliers to bend these back, and they’ll never look the same.

Hitch slider may help if it wasn’t an off camber situation.

It is. The fit is direct bolt on for everything.

I mean trail damage isn't something that can really be avoided if you do it long enough. If someone is that worried about some minor scuffs, maybe it should just stay on pavement and get a beater for the trails. If you do anything but the most basic trails, damage will happen. And sometimes even on those it will. ?‍♂

I disagree. I’ve wheeled for almost 30 years and can count the amount of body panels I’ve crushed on one hand. You can push the capabilities of your vehicle without beating it up. The exhaust design, for a Jeep isn’t great. I was hoping someone has tried removing the tips. I should have gone with the next venture exhaust skid in retrospect.

I agree. I have done my share of damage through the years I am not in the "Badge Of Honor" crowd with it. When I break or bend something I fix it. I have friends who are good with it and just laugh off the damage. To each his own for sure. I still use and enjoy my jeep offroad. Just not big rock gardens. That being said our season is just starting here and I just installed a exhaust skid myself. I too have concerns about the tips though. I am going to mod tips so they can be pushed up as tight as I can. If I bend them I might try and shorten them some also. We will see.

I took mine off and filed the slots so I could tuck them up higher. This gained some clearance, but not enough for the more serious terrain.

For an offroad venture, one option might be to pull the outer pipes only, then don't use the performance exhaust. Limits your losses :) and also might allow you to rotate the inners a little higher out of harms way.

Regarding pulling both inners and outers, damage from exhaust heat might be a concern. Perhaps a pair of auto parts store exhaust elbows, or having a shop make a couple elbows for the inners only?

Unless you're hitting trails with pretty steep drop offs (ledges) or inclines, you'll be fine leaving them on.

It just seems whomever designed the exhaust for these 392's never thought about off-roading. They hang way too.low.

Not a 392 owner, but everytime I see one, i cannot stop thinking about how crappy the oem exhaust looks. 392 is dying for some exhaust tip advertising out the back.

obviously not off road friendly, but man would it look so much better

Curious to hear a follow-up on this! Did you end up popping off those tips or just running it as-is? How did it perform? Hope you had a blast either way!
