I'll agree with that. I believe all the variation of packages with overlapping features is all a marketing ploy. "what can we do to get more people in the doors to buy our vehicles?"
Personally, I think it is nothing more than plain ole incompetence.

Automakers spend millions of dollars every year conducting consumer research to package options in ways that (1) optimize manufacturing and production, (2) maximize marketing, branding and corporate profits, (3) maximize the value they provide to the consumer, and (4) facilitate the buying process.

When I look at the current JL lineup, I see FCA tossing the noodles onto the wall to see what sticks, and passing the burden to consumers of figuring out what to buy by leaving it to us to navigate the chaos of options, editions, motors and other possible permutations.

Im not a rock crawler and love the trails that don't require me destroying my Jeep. The Selec-Trac was great in Colorado on the Alipne Loop. Though I still don't understand how to use the hill descent control.

Buying a Toyota Tacoma was an eye opener for me.

All I had to pick was:
  1. Cab - Extended or crew
  2. Bed - 5 or 6 ft long
  3. Transmission - manual or auto
  4. Trim: base, SR5, Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited or TRD Pro - I picked TRD Off-Road, which included a rear locker, Bilstein shocks with 1” extra in ride height, electronic crawl control, 16” wheels and AT tires
  5. Exterior color
  6. Options package - in my case, there were only 2
    • Technology Package, which added backup sensors, blind spot monitor, wireless charging, forward collision, adaptive cruise control and HIDs
    • Premium Package, which added heated leather seats, power sunroof, dual climate control, power rear slider, top-of-the-line audio with navigation
And that was it. Anything else I could buy afterwards and slap it on myself.

This simplification also made it locating a truck with the exact equipment I wanted easy to find.

I have come across many JL owners who wished they had gotten proximity door locks, or LEDs, or backup sensors, or Cold Weather Group, or Selec-Trac, or whatever. But by the time the had narrowed down what they wanted, they went into the dealership, the dealer showed them what they had, that they were so confused that they didn’t realize they were leaving out option(s) they really wanted.

I bought a 2019 Wrangler Sport, but I am now realizing it wasn't a normal Sport. I think it has more than what a basic Sport has. I wanted specific things in my Wrangler and it was difficult to find what I wanted without ordering something special from the factory.

The dealer found one that had close to what I wanted. It was a Sport that was built for some reason that had the following:

New to this forum and am looking at buying a Jeep within the next month. This post caught my eye, because I have been researching the different trims. My main thing that I would like, and what I feel separates the Sahara and Rubicon from the Sport and Sport S is the USB ports that are on the back of the console for the rear passenger. Going on road trips with kids, this is a must. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only trims that have that are the Sahara and Rubicon.
Do the Sport S trims have this as an option and what option would that be? Thanks for the help!

I wish my sport had full time 4WD for nyc winters because the roads here are patches of snow/ice then asphalt all at the same time, so it’s either you better make sure you’re going straight in 4WD or take it real easy around snow and ice in 2WD

Keep in mind that it'll be easy to add USB ports (think stereo shop). Buy what you'd like without considering that feature.

Oh my god... so much whining in this thread! Those of you complaining about option overdose- you’re all wrong, but it’s okay.

1. FCA is doing just fine offering all these packages, options, etc. They’re enjoying both higher sales numbers and higher ATPs on the Wrangler (adjusted for inflation) than in the YJ/TJ days.
2. You’re advocating the consumer having FEWER choices? You think that’s a good thing? That benefits no one except FCA. I’m excited that we can get options á la carte. If we couldn't everyone would be on here complaining that they can’t get the LED headlights without body-colored fenders or whatever.
3. The people that you’re describing who would be overwhelmed by option overload are the people who just go to the lot and buy whatever’s available. FCA (and dealers) love these people. They’re also the type to pay $5000 for dealer-installed extras.

A Rubicon is separated from a Sport by a USB port?

does my Rubicon even have a USB port in the back? I hope so or otherwise, I have a Sport.
