Makes sense to me. Aren't Gas Taxes used to maintain our roads? Don't pay, stay off the roads. Simple.

G.
For me, it's worth the extra $100 to own a hybrid due to the number of miles I drive. But for some people, they will end up spending more than if they owned a similar non-hybrid car.

It still seems a little odd though... Last year we had such a huge tax surplus that the entire state of TN was only charged $5/ea for plate renewals regardless of the type of vehicle... Why all of the sudden are we saying we don't have enough money coming in?

I could make an educated guess, but it'd probably get me banned. ;)

Interesting. We’ve been thinking of moving to Tennessee for a few years now. We travel there often due to friends and Veterans we know there. So anytime I see something like this I take notice.

We have no state income taxes, but our sales tax rate is 9.5%...

It all comes down to what you have to pay a year for registration. Tesla's pay $5 per year and can pay 5 years at a time so $25 for 5 years. My Rubicon 4Xe is $1,845 for the first year....

It's about time states start making up for the decreased gas tax revenue (that they rely on for road maintenance) đź‘Ť

It'd be nice if they actually maintained roads other than the Interstates and city streets... Our side roads here in a lot of areas are horrible...

The side roads in my area aren't too bad, but I hear ya. Winters & potholes seem to plague TN roads.

NC did this as well. Lost revenue from gas tax and the weight causes more wear and tear on the roadways.

Been a thing in Ohio for a while now. Hybrid extra $100; EV and PHEV $200. Savings in gas more than make up for that though.
