Source? I thought they were planning on phasing out the pentastar in favor of the 2.0 and i6. I'd be surprised to see it in the center of a range extender design.

The over 600 hp & torque Ramcharger with nearly 700 miles of range uses the 3.6L v6 only for charging batteries. It seems unlikely that Jeep would reinvent something else for the Wrangler, but it's possible.

Ah, right. I just assumed it was already running the i6 like the wagoneers. Glad to see the old v6 hanging around a bit longer.

The REPB-based J70 probably will in 2028, but they're supposed to update the existing 4xe PHEV in 2025.
I look forward to how this powertrain works out. IMO range-extended PHEVs make more sense than parallel PHEVs in general. Pretty sure I don’t trust Jeep with either though ?

It could be incredible...if they do it right.

The updated PHEV is going to have the Pentastar in it.
You have intel or sources? Any insight on the improvements or new figures for HP/Torque and electric range?

Turbos don’t do much good on a low rpm constant speed gas engine, the available V6 could fairly easily be tuned with a cam and TB/intake designed for maximum efficiency at a constant likely ~14–1800 rpm.

“The Pentastar is a very good, lower-cost, rock-solid, high-quality stalwart of our collection, and we have no plans to replace it,” Bly said. “In fact, shortly, you will hear of an improvement coming, and it will be a bit of an electrification story.”

There was another article that I can't find, but I expect the 2025 4xe to have two different engine alternatives, the 2.0 and the 3.6 - that is how they are going to replace the 392.

So you think the 3.6 liter 4xe will be much higher in HP and Torque allowing it to replace the 392? I wonder if they are also revising the 2.0 liter hence the Hurricane 500 moniker.

Doesn't it seem more likely that they're referring to using the 3.6L v6 in REPB-based vehicles?

The 3.6 isn't any more powerful than the 2.0L. Unless they do forced induction, I don't see how there would be any cost benefit to add an additional PHEV powertrain option with similar output when the 2.0 4xe is already used in multiple vehicles.

Might be a "range extender" like Ram is doing. They picked the 3.6 for that. Only way I see 3.6 + 4xe badge happening is some kind of bigger battery + range extender option.

Yeah, I feel like it'd likely be a much smaller "generator." The Ramcharger has 5.5x the amount of battery in the 4xe, of course that will likely become more energy dense, gonna be hard to cram near that much battery and weight in.

Yeah I think it's unlikely on the JL platform full stop.

JM/J70/whatever is where it'll show up IMO as a generator, if at all.

Edit - JT is interesting though given the dimensions and the fact that they haven't yet finished the 4xe engineering...

He said "shortly", and the engine roadmap doesn't mention a REPB wrangler until 2028. To me, "shortly" more likely refers to the 2025 changes.

Using the 3.6 for the 2028 REPB seems unlikely as they could develop a purpose-designed ICE generator by then that would be far more efficient for that role.

Another possibility for the 3.6 is a non-plug-in hybrid. Less battery weight than the current 4xe, but with the improved efficiency of a hybrid. This would fit with the "a bit of an electrification story" language.
