HOW OFTEN DO YOU GO INTO FORCED REGEN?

Just wanted to find out on the group, how often does you Ecodiesel goes into forced regen? I had my first one at 7650 miles, but I feel using the 76 renewable synthetic diesel, it has less passive regens and perhaps a longer interval on forced regens? What is your experience on the forced regen?

What do you mean with a forced regen? Normally a forced regen is needed when dpf is getting clogged because you drive not enough and is forced with a OBDII tool. Otherwise it just regens normally when you are driving when the dpf sooth percentage reaches a certain percentage, for the 2.2 diesel which I drive this is 95%. This is called an active regen. A passive regen is when the sooth in the dpf is burned because the temperature in the DPF reaches a high enough temp while you are driving, for example when driving under high load. Mine does an active regen every 800 kms (depends on type of trafic you in and driving style). I needed a forced regen a few times because my DPF broke and it refused to do an active regen. Normally you should never need a forced regen.

The best way to force a regen yourself is to install the jscan app on your phone. Buy a OBDII scanner that supports the app and the dongle that overrides the security of the Jeep that allows the jscan app to write instead lf only read data. I have the OBD LINK MX. But be carefull you do not modify things you don’t know anything about.

I should clarify and apologize for my poor selection of words. I drive a good mix of city and highway driving. My city driving is not necessarily stop and go. Streets here I am normally around 45MPH. Last night, for the first time, I got a message on dash saying: DPF ALMOST FULL. REGEN WILL START SOON. KEEP DRIVING VEHICLE. Within 2 minutes the following message came on: REGEN PROCESS STARTED. CONTINUE DRIVING VEHICLE. I continue to drive and took it to the freeway and drove for about 15 minutes and another message came saying: REGEN PROCESS COMPLETED. Message disappears and normal indications resumed. I was wondering how often people might get this type of hard regen and what indications you guys had.

That means you have shut off your jeep during enough active regens and now the jeep needs to burn down the dpf to 8-9% to get a fresh start.
Sounds like your driving style would benefit from a banks idash or Scanguage to monitor what is happening so you don’t have to get your system to this point in the future.

Three types of regen:
  1. passive: soot burns off naturally when exhaust temperature exceed ~700°. Usually happens on highways at 60mph+. Driving uphill or pulling a trailer will also work - basically you need to be putting a heavier load on the engine.
  2. active: the Jeep automatically triggers a regen (at 80% full) and injects more fuel to raise exhaust temperature to 1,100°+. This action takes about 10 minutes and will conclude when soot drops to 8%. You need to be driving. Shifting into park (usually) terminates the operation
  3. forced (or manual): triggered by using a OBD scanner (like Foxwell 510) or JScan. I've done both. Basically the same concept as an "active" regen but is done at your command and takes about 20 minutes to complete. This operation is done in park. Done infrequently, if at all.

As a short-hopper I've learned WAY too much about regens. :)

As mentioned by @Grayhound, the OP has prematurely terminated too many active regens and has gotten the error message. Those aftermarket gauges are almost a must, or else you are flying blind. Just to be clear there is NO message, on the JL's instruments, when an active regen is in process - you are only notified when you are about to hit an iceberg (like the @Tupi77 ).

I've never had that message pop up in my JLURD. I do drive on the freeway every day, though, to and from work.

Hello Rickin,

that summarizes all!! Thank you so much for your input. You knowledge on regens is not way too much…..but very much appreciated!!!! This was my first one on almost two years of owning my Jeep. Trying to understand the system better and what is normal and not normal.
