Wait, are you referring to a manual wrangler being fast or were you talking about another car you use to own? The only wrangler I have ever thought was halfway fast was one I helped build that had a 502 motor with a 100 shot on it.
Fast for a Jeep is not 165 mph. Lol. But it is quicker than my cammed up 79 cj7 with 4.56’s on 35s.

Manual all the way. Great way to stay engaged while driving, plus it’s fun.

Wife and I have been manual drivers for the 40 years each of us have been driving, so I had to get the 6-speed of course.
I'm coming from a 6-speed manual Camaro, so the throws in the JL seem a little long, but from what I've read, they're shorter than the JK's.
I don't mind the gear ratios for the driving I do, and the shifter is fairly decent.
Only issue I had with the JL manual was even with the soft top, it is so quiet and vibration free that clutch engagement from a stop was kind of difficult to engage smoothly. I put on an axle back exhaust that is just a tad louder than stock, and it did make it easier for me because I could hear the engine better. Those of you who haven't turned your ear drums into garbage like I have might not have as much of an issue.
And at first I hated the ESS, but after a few thousand miles I'm kind of getting used to it.

I’ve done the same setup. Hearing what gear you’re in with the axle back exhaust makes a huge difference.

I've always owned vehicles w/manual transmissions. You not only have better vehicle control w/them, but you get better gas mileage, plus, and most important, their reliability vs. automatics.

With that said, over all, I like the JL's manual transmission. It shifts very smoothly. ;)

But, driving in stop and go traffic on my home from the dealer yesterday, either in 1st or 2nd, I'm not sure which one, I should of paid closer attention, I noticed a lot of play. A click, click noise when moving and stopping. I don't know if there is a lot of play in the transmission relative to the gears, or the ring and pinion gear in the rear is too loose. Of course if it were the rear, putting it in reverse, you would hear it there, but I don't.

Has anyone noticed this issue in their manual transmissions on their JL's?

Update: Studying it closer, it is in 1st, when doing any stop and go in traffic, that I hear this clicking noise between gears, if that's the proper word for it. It sounds like a lot of play someplace in the powertrain. Other than that, there's no issues. It shifts very smoothly. I especially like the fact that reverse is in the upper left, vs. the lower right in the JK's. With the JK transmissions, you had to be careful not to shift too far to the lower right, when going into 6th. Until you got use to it, there'd be a little grind. Putting that grab handle in order to go into reverse, is nice to have on the JL. My Ford Focus ST had it on its 6 spd. M/T.
Hi GoHack,
We understand why the clicking may be concerning. Please let us know if you decide to have your dealer look into this so we can provide you with an added layer of assistance while your Jeep is at the dealer. Just send us a private message and we would be happy to help!

Mine is on order however wondering if there has anyone that has replaced the stock transmission shift knob with something else. I see a lot done with the transfer case knob.

This gear shift knob--AS ISSUED, is really "FORM FITTING" and allows the "R" lockout ring to be easily "FINGERED" from any angle-

I've seen some of the aftermkt knobs and they would look OK in a CORVETTE/MIATA, BUT NOT THE JL--

UNBELIEVEABLY THE "AS ISSUED" knobs are "TREND SETTING"

Hey everyone, I currently own a 2018 JL RUBICON 6speed, and was wondering how many of you are out there ? Do you all have any issues with your tranny? love it? hate it? I test drove an automatic the other day and felt it was a bit faster than the manual , possibly due to no lag time between shifts, but I have been a manual person since I first started driving cars lolz, give me your feed back ! Thanks guys !
I just turned 14k miles on mine and that includes a 3k trip to Moab. I'm head over heals in love with the manual transmission and 3.6. No issues at all with it.

The Magnaflow axle back makes it even more fun. It sounds amazing as you go through the gears. It is almost as fun on a twisty country road with doors off and top down as it is off-road.

Was in Moab this past weekend and what is truly amazing is the 1st gear crawl ratio. Going up or down, with or without adding any gas, this puppy was unstoppable.

Agree wholeheartedly, that driving in the twisties with the rear muffler delete, makes you feel like you’re in an Italian sports car too.
