Is there a delay when going from stopped to accelerating? Like in stop and go traffic? How loud/noticeable is it when the the engine starts/stops? Does it vibrate the entire car? Trying to figure out if I should wait for a BSG option. Thanks

I thought I’d hate it, I was happy I could turn it off.... but, after after driving with it for a week it’s very well integrated, not very intrusive at all and arguably the best ESS I’ve experienced in any vehicle....it doesn’t bother me at all, in fact I’ve actualy come to like the silence of it sitting at lights etc.... if you are listening to music etc, chances are you don’t even notice it, no lag, as soon as you are off the brake you are ready to go.

Mine doesn't kick in all the time...not sure if it's a glitch or if I'm not meeting the right criteria for it to kick in. It's a new feature to me so it's noticeable when it happens. It's not bad but you do feel a slight vibration when the engine stops and starts.

Mine only kicks in it I compress the brake all the way.
If it is saving me gas why not?! Not sure why so many people hate it. Doesn’t bother me at all

There are situations where it won't kick in. For example, if the outside temperature is too low, or the engine or cabin is not warm enough, it will not engage. I think it is also disable if hill assist is engaged, your wheels are turned, your hood or door is open, etc.

I don't mind the ESS at all. I think it's better than the ESS in a rental (Ford Escape) I drove a couple months ago.

Does anyone know if turning the engine over so often with ESS causes undue wear on the engine? That's my one potential concern.

Not that irritating, I don't find myself turning it off.

Good to know - I figured there were nuances where it would prevent it from kicking on. I'd also like to know more about engine wear.

Engine wear is increased, but components are also improved to try to compensate for that and keep it under warranty, but that also means if you disable it then theoretically it will last longer?

However, like the theoretically gasoline savings of ESS, is the difference significant enough to matter to those people who care?

I wouldn't worry about undo wear on the engine, since apparently it only starts working when normal operating temperature is reached, so these are not cold starts. However, I just can't see how it can be good for the battery/starter/alternator. I like that we get these in more robust versions because of ESS, but I'm going to turn off ESS to make sure they last a long time too.

Is there only one battery and one starter motor? Or are there auxiliary batteries and motors that serve the ess?

From what we've been able to gather, although it is still a bit of a mystery, the 3.6L has a small auxilliary12V battery that just keeps the interior operating seamlessly during a stop/start event, which is driven by the standard 12V starter battery. This would be similar to what the current Grand Cherokee has.

I suspect that the 2.0L will only have the 12V starter battery along with the 48V BSG (eTorque) battery. The 2.0L will essentially have two starter systems, the BSG starter and a regular starter for cold starts. However, the regular starter in the 2.0L is supposed to be smaller than the one in the 3.6L, which has been beefed up for ESS.

Im already ashamed that i now have the dealer change sparkplugs for me due to the complexity, are they going to take away changing the battery as well? Jeez.
