My 2020 Sahara JLU has eTorque on the V6 engine. ESS worked fine, but after a recent long highway trip it always shows "start/stop not ready". My wife hates it, so this is fine by her. I'm indifferent about the feature, but I'm worried it indicates some other problem.

But what problem does it indicate? I have no way to test the 48-volt battery, and there's nothing in the Jeep that shows its status. The message gives no information ... in other contexts, the message shows the reason ESS isn't enabled: driver's seatbelt isn't on, or HVAC is operating, or engine temperature, for example. No lights or errors, just the "not ready" message and ESS doesn't happen.

How can I figure out what's wrong? Undoubtedly, the dealer will charge a $3500 diagnostic fee, and I'm not into that.

LATER: Turns out that my IBS sensor connector was cracked and not retaining one of the pins.

Go for a 10 minute drive with a/c off and then stop at a red light or stop sign and see it activates.

Does the eTorque have the small aux/ESS battery too or just the 12v and 48v?

I’m not sure on the stop start I personally wish you could turn it off and leave it off. But if your on oringnal battery it is time to change it. Factory batteries r junk

It's most likely the charge on the battery. Put a tester on it and read it, if it is under 70% charge it will start tripping warnings. Charge it up, or since it is now old, replace it.

It did not. Without starting the Jeep, I measured the battery at the terminals with a multimeter: 12.6 volts. Unlocking the jeep, the measured voltage was the same.

When I started the Jeep, the dashboard indicated 12.5 volts and quickly rose to 13.9.

I drove around town (25-30mph, only a couple stops) and ESS was still "not ready". Highway for about 12 miles, back around town. Still "not ready". The dash dropped to 13.7 or so.

Seems like the battery is always charging. From other posts, I think older models (or non-eTorque models?) will show "battery charging" as a reason on the display, but I don't get that. Just plain "Start/Stop system is not ready."

eTorque has an 8/80k warranty. Dealer shouldn’t be charging you jack shit to diagnose it.
That would be great! Where did you read that? I can't find any mention of eTorque-specific coverage at mopar.com.

if it is under 70% charge it will start tripping warnings.
I'm not getting any warnings, just "Start/Stop not ready". There are no other symptoms of the battery going -- starts strong every time, everything works fine. The charging voltages I observe suggest that it's charging. Maybe I'll buy a tester and check ...

Yesterday, I drove about 110 miles on the highway and the ESS never became ready. I'd think the battery would've charged up on such a long drive.

Start stop not ready is the warning. Probably just a low charge.

Thanks ... but that link doesn't work because you took a screenshot of it. I ended up finding this coverage myself in the "Warranty - Gas" booklet at the Mopar.com site. It's great to know that I have warranty time left here, so I'll get in touch with the dealer if I can't diagnose the issue myself.

Start stop not ready is the warning. Probably just a low charge.
This morning, I tested the battery with a Foxwell BT-705.

The first in-car test said a "surface charge" was detected. Kinda curious, since the Jeep had been sitting for about 18 hours. The tester read about 175 CCA on my 600 CCA battery, and gave it a 20% SOH and 80% SOC score.

I disconnected the negative terminal and did an out-of-car test. The battery scored 725 CCA (!).

I ran another in-car test and this one passed; back to 725 CCA and both SOH and SOC were above 90%.
