The strictest definition would be driving where there isn't a road. So, in that case even Pritchet Canyon in Moab would still be considered on road.
So would the Rubicon Trail, it's Forest Road 14N34! So by that definition my avatar picture is not off-road :CWL:

I don't personally believe that "off-road" needs to mean that you're not on any established road or trail whatsoever, I think that definition is too strict and like you said, it's often not ethical (or legal in many cases) to drive where there isn't an established road or trail.

Based on the strictest possible definition of "off road" the Rubicon Trail is still considered on road. Personally, I would definitely consider the Rubicon Trail to be off road. I think that anything that requires 4wd, especially low range to be off road.

Off-roading is anything that those without higher clearance vehicles will either get stuck, hung up, high center or tear the bottom out of the underside and have no means of personal recovery. This means a muddy county gravel road in the spring could be considered “off-roading”. 😁✌🏻

Just know that the Rubicon Trail is a road and law enforcement even patrols it. I had to reassure the cops that we were doing the right thing while we ran the Rubicon trail.

a very broad question.

at minimum, it's unpaved (or significantly separated from the pavement; think Snow).
that said, there are 5 different categories of unpaved roads on some US state maps, and many of them are in better shape than the roads in some countries.

what i might call "off-roading" probably (but not always) involves 4WD of some kind, and/or requires attention to tire placement. that could be Dez running, or floating on Snow, Dunes or beaches. one thing those all have in common is that there's some risk of getting broken and/or stuck if it's not done properly.

(this reminds me of a definition of Porn; "i can't define it, but you know what it is when you see it.".)

what do i go off-roading for?
i don't like being limited to where someone else has already paved, and many of the places i've enjoyed the most have never had roads paved to them. it could be argued that some of them are still fabulous specifically because roads have never been paved to them and that's limited traffic to them.
i know some people like 'off-roading' specifically for the challenge of going someplace just *because* it's NOT easy to do (think 'Hammers'); more power to them if they can do it without harm, but that's not me anymore.
i do like doing the difficult stuff well if i'm doing it, but am over with doing it just *because* it was difficult.

I think the essence of off-roading is leaving the paved roads behind and heading into places few people ever see. Starting from the city, then into the forests, the deserts, the hills, the snow... Getting stuck in mud, crossing streams, climbing over obstacles. The fun of off-roading is endless. For anyone who loves nature, it’s just amazing. You can get away from crowds, escape the noise, and feel completely immersed in the moment.

At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun. That’s it.

I’m curious how you define off-roading. What do you go off-roading for? This might seem like a broad question, but I’d love to hear different takes.

I've seen that Jeep on one of my recent Rubicon trips. I'm not sure if it was this last year or the year before that, but I have seen that Jeep on the trail. I thought he had an awesome job, getting paid to do the Rubicon.

That's the type of law enforcement JobI could do in retirement.

The Jeep went off road:

Have seen that video a thousand times and it is just painful to watch. Cannot believe the couple survived--and the dog. Know the girl had serious injuries, but have not heard a follow-up as to her status today. Just brutal.
